If you're talking about the term "otaku" well, for that term in Japan "otaku" doesn't refer to just anime fans I've read. There can be car otaku, and other [name of hobby] otaku. And I think in Japan "otaku" may not be a compliment or the safe-poke-at-teasing that it is by non-Japanese fans.

Yeah, I know that otaku doesn't only refer to people obsessed with anime/manga, but when it comes to forums like these I'm pretty sure most know what I'm referring to ^_^'''
In Japan it isn't a compliment, but I take it as one since I'm not in Japan [yet] 😀
