Haru yo, Koi and Kuchibiru Tameiki Sakurairo are examples of yuri by women. Historically, lesbianism has been closely associated with feminism, so it is not surprising to find yuri/shoujo-ai written by women for women, in addition to yuri for men. Not all of these series are written by women, but many of them are:
Shoujo shoujo-ai: http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?genre=Shoujo_Shoujo%2BAi&perpage=50
Shoujo yuri: http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?genre=Shoujo_Yuri&perpage=50
Josei shoujo-ai: http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?genre=Josei_Shoujo%2BAi&perpage=50
Josei yuri: http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?genre=Josei_Yuri&perpage=50

There are also a few men who write yaoi for women, in addition to the more numerous men who write bara directed at gay male audiences. Examples can be found in this thread: http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=2683

There are far more female yuri authors than male yaoi authors. Even a lot of male-oriented yuri/shoujo-ai (even some adult/hentai) are written by women. Aido is an example of seinen yuri by a female mangaka. But it certainly reads like a josei romance (and the art looks like some alternative josei).

KOBAYASHI Takumi is female author who draws seinen/adult/yuri. NINOMIYA Hikaru is another one. And don't get me started on Takewakamaru.

The content doesn't matter, I think. Mangakas always have to work with their editors.

My narrow-minded opinion is that males write stupid yuri.

Yuri written by female authors can be stupid too.

You know, shoujo-ai started out as a girls' genre. Look at all the earliest ones, like Claudine, Maya's Funeral Procession, and Oniisama E... all written by critically-acclaimed, talented women, and all just about as shoujo as you can get. Yuri written for men came later. Even now a fair portion of yuri is written for women, and an even larger portion is written by women.

There are far less men that write yaoi since gay porn for men is usually classified differently, as bara or g-comi. There are a few threads on here that list the yaoi writers that are known to be male.

Takatsuki Noboru is a male mangaka who writes yaoi, although i'm not much of a fan..
