I like burning desire to succeed and heartless combined as in willing to destroy (literally) that gets in the way of them succeeding. Think Light or Lelouch.

Someone who refuses to surrender or give up on their ideals no matter how much they go though, even if it means certain death. I agree that it's overdone, especially with so many shonen manga out there, but I still like it. Day to day courage is nice too, makes me think of Mariko from Girl Friends.

As long as they're not some cowardly character or one of those really kind characters who somehow solves all their problems without getting their hands dirty ><

I love the type of characters that have "Burning desire to succeed/refusal to surrender" and sometimes "heartless." XD I really dislike the weak and overly reliant types. Just annoying, in my opinion. Gotta be STRONG ;p

I like the characters who have to develop it to a cool person but they do not have to be super stupid. Or the ones who are just super BA people who always know what to do. 😀

For me, it's really hard to pick just one quality that is my favorite (of course, that woud have to be from a list far more extensive than the list of options here). I have a much easier time saying which character traits I don't prefer... So from the list given, I'll just tell ya'll what I think about all of them.
I do not prefer: heartless, plain hopeless
I'm indifferent toward: burning desire to succeed, weak/broken
I prefer: kindness and honesty, refusal to surrender, ingenuity, courage
Honestly, I most prefer for a character to have all of those traits that I listed as preferred (combined, that is). But since I have to pick just one, I picked ingenuity, because, comparing each individually, I think ingenuity is the most alluring.

since I'm pretty much bored-to-death with burning desire to succeed thing... Thinking of that will make me think that person will never give up to the point of utter annoyance
and Kind and honest is my second choice -^____^- and the negative traits..huh! no way I want a protagonist that I'll like have any of that though if it's heartless, maybe it'll be cool though I've never read any manga that have a protagonist like that
