One quick little question (Please don't attack me!)

So pretty much every manga reader I know of is madly in love with One Piece. I've recently started reading it and while do enjoy it, I don't find it as engrossing as everybody claims it is. Is there a moment where everything changes and it suddenly becomes insanely awesome? Is there something I'm just not getting? I just hit chapter 50. Thanks! 🙂

truthfully im one of those people who is in love with the series. dont worry i had the same feeling when i first started the series. if ur looking for some pick me up then i feel that it wouldnt be until they after sanji joins the crew for the arlong park arc. if ur at 50 then ur right around the area if not there.
Ah I can help with this one because I was feeling exactly the same way when I was where you're at.
Yeah it gets better. Much better. Just stick through it all, it's worth it.
I put off One Piece a lot because of the sheer amount of chapters but I read everyone and realised what I was missing, so yeah, just keep on going.

Since you're already at chapter 50, just keep going. But to be honest, it really starts getting good around the Alabasta arc (And that's about 100 chapters from where you are now). The only other arc before that one that wasn't average is the Arlong Park arc, so I advise you to skip to the Alabasta arc to go to the One Piece Wiki to get a quick summary to catch you up on the chapters you skip.

Keep going, it gets better with every chapter the further you go.
Considering the series is at 500+ chapters right now, you're only on the tip of the iceberg. 🙂

I felt the same way at first. I started out reading off and on but eventually I just couldn't put it down. It does take a while going through the set up of the one piece universe but the story is just amazing! I've never read a more emotional manga with such in depth character development. Keep on going, it'll be worth it 😀

I plan on sticking with it. I never quit something unless it becomes highly unbearable. Thanks for the quick replies everyone! I'll keep reading and maybe you'll eventually see me posting in the weekly chapter threads!

one of the reasons so many people are addicted to one piece is because of the way the author layers bits and pieces of information throughout the entire story. so that later on you go back and check things out and find deeper meanings to what was going on or figure out why things happened as they did. but all the half information leads to a lot of speculation from people which gives them a more vested interest in the story and therefore they become more passionate about it.

I was curious about it, too 🙂 I dropped One piece after 17th volume or so because I thought it was too silly and the art wasn't very appealing... But if it gets better, then maybe I should pick it up 🙂

😲 I'm thoroughly surprised. I thought I was the only one feeling that way... I'm a huge fan right now, but right when I started reading it, I honestly doesn't feel that it's all that great (I'm an avid manga reader, so I read almost any sort of manga even if I don't quite like it..), and yeah I think it gotten pretty good when they start goin into the Grand Line...
But the one thing that really impressed me is when I realize that One Piece was thoroughly thought out and a well planned manga, like how early in the beginning there are various random, trivial, characters.. or so I thought, until later on it's shown how that exact random bits and pieces that had been laid out will craftily be connected or interwoven one way or another by Oda... (or maybe he just made it up along the way, who knows, but it's still impressive nonetheless)

nahh, the great thing about One Piece is that even though it doesn't start as the other popular shonen manga with a big and great first chapters that suck you right in is that with every next chapter OP gets better and better, more epic then the previous chapters, unlike the other it's compared with like Naruto or Bleach or FMA who had a great start but then kind of plunged nose down, OP is a manga where you can actualy see that the mangaka thought out of every detail in carefuly and slowly making it to what it is today
That's why whenever I start to read a manga I read at least 25-35% of it before I can farely judge it, and for OP I know it's long but it's worth it. That's why I get so annoyed when I see people rate OP with a one coz I know they probably read a few chapters and then threw it away, they really should think more with their heads coz if there's such a huge number of ppl that love the manga then there should be a reason behind it as well, if you grit your teeth over the different drawing style and the kinda childish begining you'll find yourself as a new slave to the greatest shonen of all, not to mention that I haven't found a living person who's top three manga isn't OP after they've completely read it to the current ch....so yeah, trust me to everyone that felt that this manga isn't that much in the beginning read on, you'll find yourself loving it 😉

One piece for me is not as great as many ppl say.
I mean it is good, but not great.
In fact, it copies a lot of things from Pirates of the caribbeans, Dragon Ball (mostly) and Dragon Ball Z.
I did a marathon of One Piece, I started to finding interesting until episode 250.
The previous chapters were boring, the only reason I kept watching was bc ppl say is way better than other famous mangas, I wanted to uncover the mystery.
I mean many ppl say that after the alabast arc it gets better....to tell you the truth the only interesting thing I found about it, was Usopp.
The supposely emotional moment didnt do anything for me, I have cried more in Naruto than any other manga.
And also bc it made me nostalgic, since some fights scenes and several characters seem to come off from Dragon Ball.
Another thing, why I dont think is great, is bc its slow plot. Very, very slow.
The fights are not that great (if we compared to Bleach, Bleach has better fights)
I do admit it has more plot than other action shonnen mangas.
But it seems like fights, and powers had to be sacrifice in order to have some plot.
Plus I find some of the jokes vulgar.
But it seems it might be getting more interesting with the haki and all that.
So I would recommend for you just to jump the first 250 episodes.
Anyway, I do understand how ppl may think that One piece is great, even thou the drawing is not that good.
Is bc many of them are too young and never had the opportunity of reading and watching Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump.
So if you had never watched this or so, you may like it.
I think that maybe the only reason Im still reading, apart from the possibility of power ups...is Usopp LOL
This is just my humble opinion.

lots and lots of words
. Don't take offense to me clipping your post. I actually agree with you to an extent.
You say there are a lot of similarities between OP and Dragon ball. Oda did work as an assistant on that book, so the chances of there being similarities is reasonable. I'm not saying its good or bad. I'm just saying its there. I can't really comment on the fight scenes since its been so long that Bleach had anything truly entertaining in it. What I can say though is one reason I like One Piece is its stable. It hasn't really dipped in quality as much or as often like Bleach and Naruto do.
Sarcasm just doesn't work over the internet.

I don't really mind similarities so long as its not just a blatant copy and as long as it's interesting. If you want to point out Dragonball references you should see Bleach. With the far too obvious hyperbolic time chamber. It cracked me up when I read it.

@Gabyta07, Just wanted to point out some inaccuracies in your statements:
- I'm old enough to have read Dragon Ball and I still think One Piece is great. I actually think that is a pretty condescending thing to say.
- One Piece has absolutely no similarities with Dragon Ball Z. Dragon Ball yes, but Z no.
- Oda does not copy anything from Pirates of the Caribbean (2003!). If anything is similar it's because Disney actually picked up a history book for once or may even have copied from Oda. (wouldn't put it past them)
The real reason some people don't like One Piece is because it's quite simply not their cup of tea. Everyone has tastes and some are just different to others. If the first 250 didn't grow on you at best this will be a "good" or "decent" manga to you and I'd recommend you not even bother.
Personally I quite enjoy the fights, the episodic arcs and characters that grow on me. The overlying plot that weaves the entire story together and also helps make the story cohesive. You never feel lost reading and you never feel like a victory comes cheaply as Oda clearly knows at what stage a certain fight happens (okay that one time at Impel Down). I love the humor (which is similar to Dragon Ball) and most of all I love how One Piece makes me want to pump my fist in the air.
