Oh god, and here comes pages and pages of closed minded people talking about how their precious anime is better than those horrid North American cartoons with their silly superheroes and what not. -.-

Anyways, all western cartoons are more well animated than anime. In the western world it's just standard to have a higher frame rate, and therefore more fluid animation. This is fact. The art style is whatever you prefer I guess, but there's no doubt western shows are way better animated.

I like the art styles of Batman: The Animated Series and 6teen (Canadian, but it still counts). Batman not only has a great style but wonderful animation and yes I think it beats out quite a few anime in the story department, not all but several.

That's why I specifically said Batman: The Animated Series. There's only one show named that. You know, Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill? Arleen Sorkin? I was also just saying I like the visual style of 6teen. It does beat some comedy anime I've seen but that's more of a cultural thing.

Dang I forgot Boondocks.

I would say Justice League beats many anime in art and story, especially story. Not only that but American cartoons also have the advantage of having a set amount of episodes before production meaning they don't deteriorate in quality over time.

Spikebaby, you're my soulmate.

I just popped in vol.1 of the collection (it's been... ~10 years since I've last seen it), and wow... Batman:TAS is really good. I'm not being biased based on childhood nostalgia, but the storyline, voice acting, sound effects and MUSIC (seriously... the theme and musical scores are movie-worthy) provide a wholesome package.

Haha, yeah nostalgia isn't at all a part of why I like this show (the first time I saw it I was 14 and I'm not much older now. But once I saw a few episodes I got all the box sets. You're right about the music. As a result of it some episodes bring me to tears, like the Two-Face one.

I would say about 90% of cartoons are better done then anime at least animation wise. If you really look at the animation style you'll see they cut corners a lot, lots of still head shots, reused animation, ect. And it all the looked the same. Every series these days is the same harem/echii with the same art and story. Ya might get three series a year that tries to be different with story and art style.

Story wise, I'll have to say half and half. While anime, like a said, seems to be the echii over and over. But a lot of western stuff is the same slap-stick humor. Things have been looking up though, a lot of really nice looking series coming out lately.

So if I had to pick, I'm going to have to western is better.

Not that I watch many cartoons, but I'd have to say Avater - The Last Airbender (and hopefully the second season coming next year as well).

Based on the cartoons I watched in my youth looong looong ago and have mostly forgotten (of which most were either European or dubbed Japanese) and the very few western animated series I've watched since then (maybe 5 in the past 10 years)... most ending in complete disappointment after only one or two episodes. Avatar being the exception.

I would like to point out that since Avatars animation is done in South Korea [as is alot of the japanese animated series...if not all]
japanese animation have a big sticker that say MADE IN KOREA

maybe...that show should not be counted?

whatever

Iron Man: Armored Adventures
seriously... CGI crap... is that considered art now?

A lot of animation is outsourced to Korea including shows like Family Guy and The Simpsons because it is cheaper. The same animation companies that work on American cartoons also work on anime, of course you wouldn't be able to tell because they are animated according to the style and standard of their clients. Anyway, a lot of popular shows would be eliminated from the list simply because they are outsourced. Also I don't see how CGI can't be considered art.

IDD. There is no anime that can beat these.
Ducktales
Darkwing Duck
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
