Hold Up... Publishing Yaoi over Shoujo Smut?

Why do you think publishers are picking up Yaoi titles but not Shoujo-Smut titles?
Recently Chapters (Basically Borders in America) has been releasing Yaoi with some explicit content that is released by Tokyopop.
Now, I'm not going to go into detail about Yaoi; but WHY is it okay to release Yaoi titles... but not cool shoujo smut titles?
A-LOT of people read shoujo smut, and it isn't HALF as bad as most yaoi. Like Yaoi is pretty much hentai while smut is... smut.
I want my smut published 🙁
Midnight Secretary, Uwasa-no Midori Kun, HoneyxHoney Drop, ANYTHING by Kayono...
It's odd cause you would assume yaoi would be more taboo then hetero smut?
🙄 Is Confused
Edit: I HAVE read at least 20+ Hentai Series (I don't put them on my list though 😛 ) and at least 10 Yaoi Series.
I Don't HATE Yaoi... but I find the Uke and Seme business nonesense. If I want to watch two guys going at it I want two MEN going at it. Not one man and then a woman with a penis. 😔
PS: The ratio of Yaoi to Smut:

Edit: oh my, the numbers speak for themselves. O_O
Licensed shoujo-smut Licensed Yaoi.
Edit: **Can people that think I'm just shitting on yaoi stfu? Cause thats not the question. **
Question? At what point do you think importing Yaoi became okay?

It's so not.
I've read plenty of BL with a much greater content than most smut out there.
Regarding your question, maybe because it's what the market demands. They'll publish what sells. That's not to say those getting licensed are all wonderful and amazing. Frankly, I'm not a fan of most popular BL titles. But I wouldn't really know which ones are licensed, since I don't buy much English mangas.

Okay...I doubt it has anything to do with this. More like the Yaoi fanbase is growing larger. So if more fans want Yaoi, publishers are going to give them what they want. O_O

I've read many shoujo-smuts that are borderline hentai, and those were bad. Yaoi is not "pretty much hentai" you can't base this on only two or three titles that are very explicit. I'm not sure about this but Shoujo labeled as smut have sex scenes (not explicit, but they still have it), right? Well not all Yaoi titles are the same; not ALL of them are overly explicit. I've read my share of Shoujo-smut and Yaoi and if I had to pick between the two I'd probably choose the latter. D:

You have to remember that there isn't really an equivalent for yaoi in Canada/USA (the closest thing is gay porn), so publishers have a nice niche market that they can pump funds from.
That being said I haven't actually looked at statistics for the # of smut vs. yaoi titles being picked up, and I don't know much about the publishers you're talking about, so it may not be true at all.

Shouldn't this be in the Shoujo/Josei section?
On topic: I'm not surprised about the number of published yaoi mangas in the US compared to the shoujo smut.
I read so much mangas, I'm too lazy to watch anime! 😛 😛 😛

Yaoi is also being covered.

I am against the whole yaoi is absically hentai, because if you do read adult (hentai) manga, its intended mostly to arouse and is porn basically.
... And yaoi is shojo/josei manga with male/male love/sex just to inform you
Yaoi/BL= female-oriented male homoerotic comics
Please refrain from dissing fujoshi and male yaoi fans please.

This.
And this thread seems to be more 18+ appropriate.

I frankly don't read any yaoi but when I was in high school I knew a lot girls and some guys that really really liked yaoi. I wish there was more josei smut that came out in the US but I have to agree with MasamiAkane, It's what the market demands and they make money.

Eh, not quite. A BL series doesn't have to have sex in it by default. There are plenty of BL titles that are just about relationships, with no sex at all. That would be like saying that josei series are inherently smutty, which would not be true: some do not have sex, some do.
A bunch of other people have already pointed this out already though, so! Moving on.
Not only am I skeptical that there is a big enough market to make bringing over shoujo smut worthwhile, I also doubt that many bookstores will carry such titles. Borders carries BL and a few Aurora smut titles, but they are in small quantities compared the amount of regular shoujo that they carry. Barnes & Noble, which is the biggest bookseller in the US, does not carry BL regardless of how tame it is (well...there are a few exceptions, but in general they don't). So I can't imagine them carrying racy comics for women either. Since the manga market targets mostly tweens and teens, I imagine that having to carry shrink-wrapped books with big 18+ stickers on them isn't very attractive to many big-box booksellers. Parents will complain, few people will try out a comic that they can't flip through first, too many of those titles are available for free online already coughcough so that's my guess.
I work at a used bookstore where the company policy is that comics with adult content must be kept 5 feet off the ground - essentially out of the reach of kids and tweens (this means up on the highest shelves, which are in actuality 6 feet up from the ground). In our graphic novel section we have a shelf for "Adult Comics & Manga" that includes any manga with an 18+ or M rating on the back. And let me tell you: while the manga on the regular shelves sells like mad, we can't sell anything off of that Adult Manga shelf. It makes me mad, because we have to put fairly non-racy, good titles like "Hot Gimmick" and "Nana" up there because of the M rating on the back. I don't even bother to put out BL (but I usually get to keep it, heehee). So I'm speaking a bit from experience here when I say shoujo smut probably won't work, no matter how many people read it online. Maybe on Amazon, but certainly not in the big-box chains.
(Borders, by the way, has declared bankruptcy and is closing stores left and right. If they get bought by Barnes & Noble, which isn't doing too hot itself, you might have to kiss BL and what little shoujo smut there is "goodbye" from your local chain. I recommend asking the friendly nerd at your local comic book shop if he (or rarely she) can special order your dirty-girly books for you; they usually can at no additional cost. A tip, a tip.)
It's not a matter of it being more 'taboo' it's a matter of not many people liking it enough to buy it. It's great if you would buy it and all, but you are seemingly in the market minority, and as manga itself is niche, a minority of a minority is something any decent publisher isn't going to cater to.
TL;DR:
It is not published because almost no one would buy it.

Wait, if you think yaoi is pretty much hentai, why do you like an author who plagiarized a yaoi title?

wow that's pretty high... i don't think most people (18+ regardless) would be able to reach that - does that mean at this store you had to get a ladder or some kind of stool to reach these sections? 😕 i imagine that would be pretty uncomftorable for most regular customers

Haha! 🤣 Because all us kids are so short? Yeah right LOL My nephew is 10 and taller than me, he'll be 6 ft. before he turns 12. That's a helpful policy >.> Not.
Though in a place that actually does sell yaoi, that might help, concerning people's eyes and their lawsuits. 🤣
As for yaoi getting published over shoujo smut, I can't say I mind. Maybe yaoi titles are cheaper to license and publish~? Not to mention how much yaoi there is, and how many of them are just 1 volume, which means they could get it out much faster, increase their profits.

You sound like someone that's never read any yaoi or hentai in their life. Hentai can sometimes have a better plot than shoujo smut. In fact, sometimes hentai can have a better plot than a lot of genres. 🤣
