Well I just wanted to know your opinions. Today we have so many alternative like Chat Clients, Torrents, File Storage servers, forum sites. So why is irc still so popular with all these lying around and why do you prefer to use it ?
😀

Edit: This is not regarding irc only as a download medium but in general.

I want to know why IRC is so awesome too.
<< IRC-handicapped
& bitter about it (so I wouldn't know why people prefer it 🤢 )

Lemme guess.... you think IRC is only for downloading manga/anime and chatting, right?

It's way more than that. Many modern day information wars are fought on a daily basis through IRC networks... if you know where to look, you can even find U.S, Russian or Chinese classified military intel.

Anyway, your question probably pertains to downloading anime/manga/porn/etc .... in that respect, for me at least, IRC more often than not gives the best speeds compared to torrents, megacrapload or rapidshit. (I even get faster speeds on IRC than with my Rapidshare premium membership).... your experience may vary though, depending on factors like location, traffic shaping, etc.

Besides, my stupid ISP recently started throttling P2P (torrents), meaning I can only manage a maximum of ~50kb/ps nowadays compared to 1MB+ in the past. (but even so, past speeds were often slower than what I could get from a good IRC bot). I've signed up to a VPN client that bypasses my throttled P2P download speeds, and only with the VPN configured can I beat IRC speeds (VPN subscription cost extra, fyi)

Another reason some people prefer IRC is because their download habits are harder to track (although I don't really have concrete proof to back this up)

Also, I have some involvement in the open source software community (Linux, BSD, GTK+) and many of my peers congregate in IRC channels almost exclusively.

Just my 2 cents~

because its like a forum but realtime. and irc is harder to track, and, you get the best speeds (when you know where to look).

For larger files (music programs, dorama, etc.), I prefer torrents, but for manga IRC is quick & easy, plus there are people I only ever see on IRC~

Familiarity is one reason - I've been using it for years so it's easy & automatic.

Better DL speeds, hosting content yourself is easier, more freedom in terms of content, less 'policed' than other communication methods, AIM sucks the D, availability of people from all over the world simultaneously, a channel for literally any subject / purpose, easier to moderate or control than a forum, doesn't require server space (as opposed to personally hosted forums), laughably small system rqeuirements, IRC scripts and other fun stuff, playing with nicks / text formatting for lulz, forums are slowpoke, Dinosaur bones have been carbon-dated as being younger than IRC, so it's well documented and stable, the best clients are free.

It's basically the most convenient method I have ever seen for both communicating and sharing things with multiple (or even individual) persons. It's not that difficult to figure out either. I can download and install mIRC, connect to a network and join a channel in under 3 minutes. 6 If I go all out and set preferences.

When transferring files, you'll find the speed of uploading and dling or transferring much faster than your normal speed originally has.

If you dced, you can always resume send. Which is GOD love <3

Stalk random ppl and leech, whut else? o.o

To be fair, not everybody gets better speeds. I didn't for a while until I got a new wireless card. And not every client has a resume feature, but it's not like the big daddy of IRC clients isn't free or anything.

I used IRC and it blows compared to torrenting.

...Really?

I haven't tried torrents for manga recently, but when I did, IRC was pretty much as fast, and the torrents died out very, very quickly. I suppose if you were getting full volumes it might be different, but for single chapters I've found #lurk on IRC to be much easier.

For larger files, I'm happy w/torrents (and happy with the ease of being able to help upload as well) so I haven't even tried to get them on IRC.

For me at least. It was too damn slow, so now it's direct downloads, file hosting sites, and torrenting for me.

There's only one Answer for that question and it is because most want to force ya to download a program, learn to use it. get into their rooms and read all the crap its being said while forming part of those wasting their time giving it to the anime comunity. It is both a mean and a cool way to feel loved and know people care enough for them(because if u dont theres no way you will go to IRC)
