The war is on...and we're obiously losing
I don't have a clue as to how many naruto/onepiece/gintama uploaders are out there in japan that english scnalations have acess to, but i hope this doesn't hit too close to home.
It means that the Japan publishers are cracking down on the major manga series scanlations.
Good bye, life.... 😢
I wonder how that 14 years old will live with $22 million debt?

although it seems he broke alot of copy right laws, that article seemed that he was in more trouble over the fact he was uploading it before it was even supposed to be out?

Ugg, what if America adopts the new law about it being illegal if downloading knowing it's copyrighted? I'll have to find a new hobby other than manga, or leech the book stores reading manga in the aisle way. But then they'll just plastic-cover the volumes... Time to take up a sport, eh?
At least mangaka will get their justice.

Only thing about that is that he uploaded the manga before the release date. I wonder if he would still get arrested if the manga that he scanlated was after the release... Would that change anything?

You must mean publishers, because mangaka will still be getting screwed by the companies that release their work.

of course the benefit to the mangaka is benefit to the publishers (althought it doesn't work the other way around)
because for every manga sold, the mangaka gets the portion of the sale.

Well I think they're just trying to find a solution. Any plan starts out bad at first. Let's see how this ends up. 😔

According to the Sports Hochi newspaper, the Kyoto police multiplied the cost of a magazine issue (240-260 yen or US$2.60-US$2.85) times the number of YouTube views (over 8 million times) to estimate the damages caused at about 2 billion yen (US$22 million).
What the hell? I'd sure be pissed if they used that logic to try and sue me. One youtube view corresponds to a copy sold? Bullshit! Lots of people could watch the video more than once, and who says everyone watching the free youtube video intended/had the means to buy anything?

It's all about the greed I guess. They can make more money suing a 14 year old than catching serial killers and rapist I suppose. 🤣

It's sad, but the kid is stupid too, uploading copyright material on youtube, updates on twitter before release date..he might have well gone on the balcony and yell his "crime"". That's like an inside job....

it´s really stupid to arrest him. I think scanlations and stuff are a good advertising for the manga. Without it i wouldn´t have bought High School of the Dead, Bakuman, Kuroshitsuji and a lot more

I'm not too worried. 🤣
He was releasing it before the release date.
And personally... I find scanning and just uploading work kinda wrong. I mean, with scanlations people are actually translating work and put a little effort into it.
But of course everyone has their own opinion. 😛

I really don't understand why the hell was he uploading on youtube. I mean, who can read manga like that? I guess it drew attention because it was uploaded before release date, but still... 🙄
All this stuff happening lately will surely cause a shake on the scene but it won't last forever. Even today millions of people are illegally downloading movies, games, music. If they couldn't stop that, they won't be able to stop scanalations either.
So could this arrest thing happen to any of you? I know that chances for it happening to me are next to nothing. 😀
