But, I think Shinji is more of a 'closed' person (meaning he doesn't understnad others much), so he needs some one to, as you said, 'heal' and well, out of all the characters, Shinji opens up to Kaworu quite alot, so i think that kind of indicates Shinji's tryin to understand him...
and... i wouldn't say 'psychotic' there... i know he has some issues...but...

i think due to their contrasting personality, they make better match.

Satsuki pinches manaka... I did compare them as they are spontaneous, Satsuki is fine the way she is as for Asuka she just need to work a bit in her slightly vionlently personality. They did sayd during the series and the movie that it is like a defense mecanism for her, maybe if she had someone she trusts she would not be so much like that...
