I like Asuka and would want it to be AsukaxShinji if there is a pairing at the end. But didn't Shinji himself say that he is attracted to Rei at the beginning of the manga and he infact joined the fight against the angels to be closer to Rei right? He also got all jealous when he saw the other guy touching Rei's hair when they were having lunch and was infact so depressed over this that he decided to quit the team.

Asuka is a fun character and all but The Rebuild of Evangelion movies have slight hints of Shinji x Rei and I gotta say I kind of like it. 🙂

I personally hate Asuka, so she's out. I absolutely love Rei; she's my favorite character. It seemed to me like Rei and Shinji had the most potential to be together. And of course there's Kaworu, but yaoi/shounen-ai is really not my thing.

Well, just so you know, she had a father complex. She wanted attention from men, especially stronger ones that could provide for her. How can anyone call the rebuild series "shitbags"? Rebuild is brilliant! The animation, directing, art and so on...they're pretty top notch.
I for one, am a fan of Mari. I think she's a nice addition (not to mention her unit was bloody awesome...)

The way I see it, Rebuild is slightly going in the direction of Shinji x Rei - and I like it! =D

..I maintain that Rebuild is a sequel (evidence for this is present in a number of different ways, but is most obvious in Kaworu's dialogue, particularly how most of his lines begin with "kondo koso"... I guess something like "this time"), rather than a remake, and in that regard it succeeds, or at least has the potential to finally bring the series to a conclusion suitable for the mainstream, though the series' eclectic, albeit esoteric, ending works for a lot of the fanbase as well (the point was character development, after all).

As a remake it would be shit. It has none of the character development or pacing that made the original series such a hit. Just some lingering themes. Cutting out Toji's big role would be a huge mistake if that were the goal. The directing is much more ameturish, the pacing is a mess, Mari, while she has potential, has proven herself to be a virtually useless character that has barely even managed to serve a role as a minor plot device, etc. etc.

That said, given that Asuka basically was the canon pairing from the first series (ending of the film considered) it's a little early to count her out. We've got two films left, and the fanboy followings for both Asuka and Rei are comparably massive. It's more likely that there will not, in fact, be any sort of pairing. That's how these things tend to work, after all. Too much backlash otherwise. So, I'll be silently rooting for Asuka and not expect anything.
