I'd read a few comics (like Peanuts, Garfield, Archie comics etc), and I love them, but I prefer manga.

I read so much mangas, I'm too lazy to watch anime! 😛 😛 😛

And I really love "Monica's Gang" (Turma da Mônica)... The english names of the characters are weird o-o
I read them since I learned how to read... There is a version of them as teenagers, but I don't like it. I read only one or two volumes than dropped... I love them as six/seven year old kids :]

Like some people said, in France comics or BD are as popular as camembert. Not only do we have an amazing domestic market but the editors also translate the authors from the entire world. So I guess we are pretty lucky.
As for the quality, French and Belgium authors are very good. Honnestly it's quite a shame that only Asterix is famous. Ok Goscinny was great but he's dead for more than 30 years now. I would said that the BD was revived in the late 80s with the apparition of great authors with the emblematic being Johan Sfar ( Satrapi, Larcenet, Trondheim, Blain and so many others). And lately since the boom of the blog, a lot of yong artists are making there debuts with comic blog. One of the most famous yet is Boulet who has start to translate in English and provide a lots of link to some other great blogs

Titeuf is also quite well known here. There even wa a cartoon which aired here. And talk about Lucky Luke. Volume 87 soon on sale, the cartoon series often airing on tv, at least once a year the movies can be seen on Super RTL. Well, mamy people think it´s american, but you can tell it´s french by the strange noses. Most I think it´s a shame that your country as our neigbour country is so famous for their comics while we only produce comics even most of the persons living here don´t know about.
I tried to read a german comic at the bookstore, but after 4 pages i stopped since it was awfull

I'm sorry but I'm a girl and when I grew up in Belgium I loved the comics of Asterix and Lucky Luke. And in my opinion these "old fashioned" comics are better then a lot of new style comics who's story and art sucks.

So tell me, what's it like living in a constant haze of stupidity?

I don't say they are bad. I love Asterix too. Probably more than foreigner for which lot's of puns are probably lost. It's just that they are not representative of today Francophone BD. It's a bit like if manga was only known by Astro.

Totally agree with you. Especially about UWO. It just seems that mangas don't have the necessary drawings and/or plots to be considered seriously enough. I mean, they are entertaining but they still lack of something to be up to par with European "graphic novels". UWO is a graphic novel, definitely not a "comic".
