anime is still a much greater honor i think because its really more popular!! i discovered it first... 🤣

That reminds me, does anyone know if there are statistics available online for how many people are watching a given anime or drama when it airs?

I know where to find some "ratings" information for dramas, but that doesn't really help much since it's not actual numbers.

I think the main point of otakuness' post was the fact that anime can be more accessible to rest of the world rather than some localized, budget drama. (Not dissing dramas, whatever floats your boat.)

And IMHO, it would be more flattering to have an anime. Since a lot of the style and sometimes story that made your series unique is lost in translation when you move to live-action.

it´d be accessible only to other geeks and nerds, and honestly most people won´t value that opinion.

This isn´t a question of which would suit the material better but of percieved value. And I´d have to give it to a live action adaptation. People will take it more seriously, pay more attention, give it a bigger buget, and probably remember it better.

More people in japan would see it. And the only people that would see it world wide would be anime watchers. That would honestly amount to nothing.

But most manga aren´t really suited for live action though. Either cause its too fantastical, or maybe involving high to middle school kids, which I don´t think is done too believably.

If you're talking about Japan TV ratings, then each 1% is (very roughly) 1 million viewers.

Well, the easy answer is both. However, I do think that a drama is more flattering. Here's why:

Manga is normal, Drama is normal, and Anime (more normal the younger you are, but popular ones don't really count against your social standing) is more closely associated with otaku. In Japan, unless your name is Densha Otoko, being an otaku is not all that cool. Actually, it's considered pretty gross, the same way people would think of stereotypical nerds.

That being said, if a manga is adapted into a drama, that means that for the most part (although there is plenty of popular anime), it's going to go to a wider audience. Yes, you may reach a wider international audience with anime, but I think in terms on "honor", drama would win it, from my experience with Japan and Japanese people.

Just because manga is manga and anime is more like it (since it's drawings and you can draw whatever you want), a live-action adaption doesn't have to suffer because of it. I've read and watched every single chapter and episode of the GTO manga, drama, and anime, and I can confidently say that the live-action was BA (it was so BA that the drama came first, and they used Sorimachi's (Onizuka) acting as part of the basis for the anime character).

But then again, this is just my opinion. Like everything else, Honor can be very subjective, though I think in Asia, it's pretty much set.

Between the two, it would be a very hard choice and to tell you the truth, I haven't decided yet.

Drama, I think is harder to catch the attention of a director or someone to have it turned into a drama. Also, more people of all ages watch dramas so the audience is larger.
The down point in this is that most people who watch don't even know it's from a manga. So it defeats the purpose of turning a manga into a drama.

Anime, on the other hand, you can trace back to the manga a lot easier. Anime also stays very true to the manga, at least for the most part. Anime, does very good justice to action and fantasy mangas. It looks better than that CG crap.

Looking at these points I think Drama pretty much wins. Just because I get to see my favorite manga character walk around in real life.
But then again, it really does depend on what kind manga it is. I read mostly shoujo and there never seems to be anything wrong with shoujo manga turn dramas, plot wise anyways.
