Quote from evilcleo
I'm the same. I personally think that that they knew each other and built a relationship based on non-romantic intentions first is the best way to start a romantic one. Gives it more depth.
I agree. Childhood friends all the way! 😀
for me it would be unrequited love became mutual
especially if the lead MALE was the First to fall in love

I don't really consider age and social relationship. I'd rather the MC pursue the character whose personality I enjoy. And preferably being decisive about it rather than derping around the whole time either being oblivious or scared of boys/girls or not being able to choose from an unrealistic harem.
Childhood friend, but without any of that "You promised me we'd get married when we were 6 years old and playing in the sandbox" crap.

animal or mystical since this seems to indicate a fantasy manga.
but if i had to choose between the other... it really depends if the MC is a boy or a girl.
also i miss a choice for the supposed looser/winner relationship. (i.e. Kuroyukihime/Haruyuki Arita).

I share your thoughts completely, even though I'm okay with the childhood friend cliche because I tend to like those kind of stories. I find interesting seeing how a longtime friendship turns into something more.
My current top 3:
Fullmetal Alchemist
Pandora Hearts
3-gatsu no Lion

I suppose it's a hypocrisy to say I don't really care even though I voted for Childhood friend but seriously, I don't actually care that much. I voted that b/c I suddenly remembered that some of the best relationships are those that grow from knowing one another from a friendship.

i think it depends on the genre for me. i read mostly bl nowadays, and childhood friend romances there are THE BEST /melts
it's cool in other genres too, but like someone said, it gets really annoying when its the cliched "you promised to marry me and you forgot!!!" garbage. cant they just start friends and slowly develop feelings as they get older?
other times i like older female/younger male 8D

I'm another one who would prefer the MC pursue a character with a personality that I like. That's why I didn't vote in this pole. If I was asked which one I dislike the most, then I would have to say close blood relatives.
It all really depends on my mood (even though I chose someone older because I accidentally over looked forbidden love T_T). Most of the time I just chose cliche romance pairings mainly because of the familiarity rather than reading something odd or different I guess, unless someone highly recommends it!

But if it makes you happy to win on the internet, have at it.

I voted inanimate object because I want to see a protagonist fall in love with a rock. It's such an absurd idea that I'm surprised it hasn't been done yet.

forbidden love interest was my choice.... but i like rivals even better, which sometimes fits as forbidden.
childhood romances are lame imo, i don't even remember who i was friends with as a child and am amazed at how this is such a common theme... surely i'm not the only one with a bad memory.

There is a yaoi that started out with a guy who was "in love" with his teddy bear (a male teddy bear) and it was to the point of wining and dining with the thing, showing it its "favorite movie" and other things. It's kind of like a little girl playing with its doll but it didn't seem like that really. It wasn't something playful, it was sincere. But again, it started out like that, eventually another guy forces himself into his life.
