I think the characters from the "Deep Love" series had it quite harsh. The most realistic the more tragic it seems, at least for me.

Those people. o.o
So sad.
I actually cried reading that manga.

Oh, yeah, and I thought Rei Kashino from MARS had it pretty screwed up, too.

The first character that came to mind was Rei Kashino but Kira was pretty bad too.

His mother was a nut case that killed herself and tried to kill him when he was like 3 or 4, his dad shipped him and his twin bother to the USA, then his twin bother how is also a nut case as well kills himself in front of Rei, and with Kira her father dies in a car accident and her step dad rapes her.

Gunslinger Girl and Diabolo everyone has some super sad story and in The Demon Ororon both main characters have really tragic back stories.

The characters from Deep Love have it pretty bad, especially Reina--it gets almost comical by the end how many horrific things happen to this poor, poor girl and her kid. The kid, incidentally was named after Ayu, the main character of the first series of stories. It's like, they couldn't torture her enough, so they had to torture her namesake as well. And then, that still wasn't enough for the authors of this series, so they created Deep Love - Pao no Monogatari just so they could torture Ayu's dog!

Kotomi and Fuchan from CLANNAD. Kotomi's flashback was so sad and Fuchan's story was heartbreaking. I cried. :[

I would definitely have to say Gatts from Berserk. To find out that you're a bastard child who was born from the corpse of your dead mother only to be raised by another women who was mute. Trained to fight at a young age not to mention being raped by another guy who was a friend of your step father. Your friend betrays you and kills his band and then rapes your girl in front of you. What a horrible life. Oh yeah, did I mention that he can't even go to sleep without demons hounding him day and night. Geez...

The girl from Bitter Virgin.

She gets raped by her step father and gets pregnant. Her mother finds out and asks how it happened. She tells her the truth. Her mother slaps her and doesnt believe her. So it happens again. The girl has a dead expression on her face crying and her mother asks who did it. The doctor tells her there was bruises on her body and it was likely forced. The girl tells her it was her father. Finally the mother believes her. She doesnt even call the cops. She chases him out with a knife. What a pathetic excuse for a mom. At the end its not even for sure she will stay with the guy she love.

And the guy from Zankoku na Kami ga Shihai Suru.

The guy is basically blackmailed into sleeping with his step father. The step father puts on this fake smile and appears nice. He's actually a sadist pedophile. The boys mother is sickly and he sleeps with the guy just to keep him with his mom. Stupid move in my opinion but whatever. Anyway he promises it is a one time thing and the boy believes him. Skipping ahead, he lied. The boy then is raped, whipped, and abused on the daily basis with no one to help him. He snaps and plans to kill the step father. He messes with his car. It goes horribly wrong and his mother dies as well.

I always though the guy from Seikai no Monshō had it tough.

His homeworld is captured by aliens and his father the president, surrenders without a fight. The result is that everyone on his homeworld would hate him if they knew his identity, so he's forced to grow up on a space station. When he does return to his homeworld in volume 4, he is predictably disliked. That situation of billions of people hating you must wreck badly one's self-esteem!

Izumi from Full Moon wo Sagashite 🙁

The fact that his mother despised and beated him because he looked like his father was terrible. But when he threw himself in front of the train with his mother watching, well, the fact that she smiled and it being the last thing he saw before he died was just heart breaking. T_____T

This... XD

I also think heroine from Bitter Virgin has a pretty depressing past, but not as bad as poor Gutts.
