I like Kevin Smith. Clerks was brilliant, simple comedy and nicely-shot. Smith himself can be a bit of an asshole though. I might be going to see his latest film this Saturday...
As for Kubrick, I've only watched Full Metal Jacket (one of the best Nam films ever made) and a bit of The Shining. I'm going to pick up 2001 : A Space Odyssey soon enough...

pick up A Clockword Orange or Lolita if you can get your hands on it. Pure masterpiece.
