I totally agree with the fact that sites like narutofan.com and even crunchyroll.com are killing the fansubbing and scanslation community.. After lurking around from the days when Dual-Translations and MangaProject were the big names in the scanslation world and seeing what's become of the community, I'm also disheartened by how alot of people are using our work for profit. Crunchyroll.com is also looking into putting up manga, most likely scanslations on their site. This is unacceptable. They just secured 4 million in venture capital from the backs of the fansubbing community and now they want to do it to us, the scanslation community. Alot of the dedicated scanslation groups are dying, with the lack of support. We don't see as many lurkers, and as such, we can't recruit and find new people to help in our efforts. Heck, on one of our releases recently we saw over 100 downloads for a chapter before seeing 1 thank you. How is that acceptable?

Most of our releases have over 500 downloads just from bots and I can count the people who thank us with the fingers of one hand ^^

"Will the book industry decline like DVD sales?"

I was borned in a country where illegal renting and selling of movies were everywhere. Fansubbing does help the illegal selling of animes DVDs because one can just upload the fansub into DVDs and sell them in market. Not many people are aware though that with or without fansubbing, the illegal selling of animes will still happen and will continue just like the selling of movies. I have seen movies where they only have 2 people voicing all the characters in a different language and sell the translated movie in the market. As long as there is profit, and there are people buying, the selling of anything will continue legally or not.

About the book industry, publishers always have to worry about people buying books or not. Years ago, I remember I told my English teacher I wanted to own a bookstore. She laughed and said if people were still reading that is. Publishers always and will be worry about whether people like to read or not and whether they are willing to buy the their books to read or not.
