Alright, I'm confused. The manga is just labeled "Dragon Ball" but the first third of the anime is labeled Dragon Ball and the other two thirds are labeled Dragon Ball Z. Why did they do this? What the hell does the "Z" stand for? Why are they doing the same thing with Naruto? Why can't they just keep the original names of the series'?

Because its a different story really. It has a different name for that.
Why do they name novels, films, and games this way? The same reason.
(Ex. Lord of The Rings: Two Towers, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King)

Perhaps they think it sounds cooler or something. Personally I think theyre idiots wasting ink and space myself, I mean if its popular under the original name as a manga, its probably going to be popular with the original name as an anime.

I guess you could say its a different story, especially with Dragonball Z (what with going into space to fight evil and stuff), actually if I recall they are also known as the "Z Fighters" or something like that so I guess it was called Dragonball Z because of that. But Naruto doesnt really have a brand new type of plot, its pretty much the same old, same old, with older characters.

its a sequel to the old one...dragon ball was when they were younger and "Z" is when they are adult like

its the same with naruto the new anime eps are called naruto shippuden/ hurricane chronicals to show that its different

Okay, I remember hearing that Z stands for Z fighters, but does anyone know what the hell GT means? One time I heard it stood four Grand Tour which sounds really stupid, but then I heard it stands for Goten and Trunks, but Goten's hardly in it.

He's actually nineteen at the end of the DB anime. So, I guess you can sort of call him and adult. But, he was still a virgin, therefore I still consider him a kid. I'd love to see a manga about Chichi trying to teach Goku how to have sex. That would be hilarious.

it really messed up the series...
I really liked only the last episode
though, i think it was a nice epilogue.

dragon ball series had like winning streak until GT. that's like one season out of a bajillion episodes dat were bad. back in the day, people were hyping dbz as much as naruto is nowadays, but now there's alot of haters for some damn reason. but on dat note, woudlnt it be interesting to see the reception people would give naruto 10 years from now.

Since the tone of the series changed, and they had a bit of filler at the end of Dragon Ball, they decided to make it a whole new series, and added the "Z" to differentiate between the two halves. It doesn't really mean anything, I think, the animators just thought it sounded cool. Same thing as Naruto, they called the second half "Shippuden" in the anime to differentiate the two halves, and they had a huge block of filler at the end of the first half. Naruto wishes it was Dragon Ball Z.
