What's love to that couple might not be (or couldn't be) love to another couple. D;

I'll say it again, why is it less honest to be in love with the idea of love? 😛

There are all kinds and varying degrees of love. It's a human emotion that encompasses the best of a person's world. Infatuation can be misinterpreted as love, but real love doesn't change. Saying "I thought I was in love with him/her." is either a process of denial after a break up, or the realization of the infatuation that was thought to be love.

Lust is single faceted. It's not misinterpreted. It doesn't make it more honest than love, it just makes it much easier to tell that it is what it is than love. You won't mistakenly lust for someone, but you can mistake infatuation for love.
