With the coming of FFXIII I've decided to buy a PS3.
I was planning on buying a new TV for my room anyways, but now I want to buy one specifically for playing my PS3. (I'm not really sure about the differences between PS3 and 360)

I want a 32" HD and I can pay up to $750 (But you can ignore this when reviewing)

What is the best brand concerning:
Lag
Pixels
Sound
Price
Overall Quality

Also, at 32" is there a big difference between 780p and 1080p; and how does that affect PS3 play?

I've been looking around and people seem to swear by Samsung but I find it a bit expensive compared to the Sharp which has its own cult following.

I live in Canada if you plan on pointing out places to buy.

THANK YOU! 😀

omg lols you're like me a bought a ps3 yesterday just for FFXIII
Concerning the question i don't really know much about HD TVs and brands but if you buy a well known brand like Bravia or something it should be fairly fine. We have a plasma and and LCD tv and from my experience it seems like the LCD is better for games.

It's the way to go.
I waited to buy my DS until Pokemon Diamond. XD

Thanks. I was worrying because some people said that plasma was better then LCD but they weren't gamers. It's great because LCD is so much cheaper. 😀

Hahaha. No.
Instead of a smart ass comment you could have given some advice.
Or could have been a smart ass AND given some advice.

I have a Pioneer Kuro in my living room and a Sharp Aquos in my sleeping room, and they've not let me down so far..... but they're both bigger than 32"

I'm not sure about US prices, but you should check out the Sharp catalogue. They make pretty decent stuff, in my experience. Some of their models have a feature called Vyper Drive, which is supposed to provide enhanced image quality for gaming (though my current Sharp doesn't have this and seems fine). They also seem to have a range of special gaming TVs, which are quite highly rated, but they may be just outside your budget.

Other brands you can check out are Samsung and Panasonic... I don't rate their stuff as highly as I do Pioneer or Sharp, but they have a much wider product range, which usually means that they're able to price more competitively.

As for resolution, it's already 2010, so try to get 1080p if you can afford it (regardless of what native resolution the game features)... Be sure to check for it since many manufacturer's 32" models still max out at 720p only (they save 1080p for the bigger sizes). Some would argue that 1080p doesn't provide much benefit for small screen sizes (like it or not, 32" is considered small these days by most of the spoiled-brat population), though. Sony would also come to mind here, but their TVs seem to look better than they perform (much like their laptop range)

Disclaimer:
I'm not much of a gamer these days.... My PS3 has been mostly used as a Blu-Ray player (at least until Gran Turismo comes out), so it's best to check out game specific sites (like IGN or Gamespot or whatever) for more prudent advice.

Edit:
I can't give you an opinion with regards to sound, since I depend on an external set (home theater or whatever the marketing gits call it) for audio.... Nothing beats a good set of headphones, though.

Boght a new on myselfe resently for FFXIII, an LG 32LH4020 for 600, 700 wiht all the extras, an 32 fullHD 1080p. LG 32LH4000 also works only a software difrense and i have heard good ting of the LG 32LH3000 found one online also 600 some minor difrenses. As far as i know and whats avalibel over here LG gives most for the money. Great picture with my current PS3 games.

Most people cant se a diffrence betwin 780p and 1080p, not when your looking at a 32 the difrense is bigger when you have bigger screens. Id go for the 1080p any way but dependning on what you find a 720p would not be a bad choice other for a good price.

As long as you are going with a brand name you should be fine.

Theres only a select few manufacture that actually makes the LCD screens and sell them to other brands and they just put the parts together and slap their name and warranty etc. Heres a listing on who makes what for who: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Who_makes_hdtv_lcd_screens might be dated but it shows what I mean.

I tend to choose a samsung and actually have an old 23" 720p samsung but now I'm using my 1080p lcd ASUS pc monitor for everything.

Sound you won't find any of these tv built in speakers being great, they will sound just fine but once you plug in a good headphone or a decent surround sound you'll never want to go back to those built in speakers.

Resolution, I would suggest always look for a 1080p tv/monitor even though at that small screen you'll most likely never see the difference and the pricing isn't that much different from 720p and a 1080p, and also the fact that you'll be sitting so far away you can't even tel the difference.

You can get a 40" at that price if you look hard enough, I usually go to http://slickdeals.net/ or using Bing.com searching for lcd tv and narrowing down on the left and side of the site: electronics->Television->price points etc. theres also google product site.

And then theres AVSForum this is one of the best resource you can go to for anything audio and video related: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1230050

and about lag: http://lgknowledgebase.com/kb/index.php?View=entry&EntryID=3012
basically look for a tv that has "Game Mode" as it will disable the internal upscaling.

Thanks guys.
I've been to the AVS forum and its helped me find the good brands.

I actually might go for this Samsung, but its only 720 p

But for $400 including tax & shipping for a 32" Samsung LCD seems like an amazing deal.
I can't find a good cheap 1080p TV. It's only the 720 that go on sale.

I still need to save the money though so I'm going to see what deals there are in a months time.

Also, I've never really seen a HDTV other then in department stores so would I really be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 720p? Would it be better to buy a cheaper 720 now and then upgrade to 1080 later?

  • I'm probably going to buy speakers since you guys seem to think the sound sucks no matter what.

Well you can tell the difference if the store clerk set the screen correctly and have a good video playing i.e. playing a HD signal that displays at 1080p from a blu-ray movie. Also you have to be basically be right next the the screen and no one watches and play games like that. Then theres the lighting, store lighting ruins the playback it looks better in the store but once you take it home it doesn't look as good or vice versa, only if you can ask them to dim down the light heh.

I would suggest getting a 1080p now, but if you want to save money now go for it. I don't think its wise to buy a 720p now and then 1080p later as it will mean you spent twice the amount in total, unless you are gonna get a new tv set no matter what then its not a lost.

The speakers is kind of hard to tell but in most cases they are not the best, but should be fine for non audiophile.

As well I guess it is good to point out that it is going in my room.
I am solely using it for gaming.
I have cable but no HD channels. And Blueray movies are way, way, waaaay to expensive.
I barely buy regular DVD's at $10 🤨

So the TV I want to get does have a gaming setting.

Well you can use the PS3 as a media center, streaming contents from your computer to your ps3 and also the PS3 will upscale DVD to 1080p which will improve the image. http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/

If you go to the AVS link i sent it shows an image about the distance you would be from a TV and its screen size and then it shows you the benefit from each resolution at a certain distance and screen size.

Thanks so much for your help.
I found a fairly good Samsung 1080p 32" for $500.

I just need to see how saving goes and if I want to wait a bit longer.
But since my room is small and I'll be fairly close, 1080p may be better.

Thanks again! I'll update this once I finally buy one and have it for a few weeks! 🙂

Sounds good.

If you have any other questions just ask, I'm usually just lurking around this site waiting for the next release heh.

Oh yeah you'll need an HDMI cable too, don't buy them from a retail store or retail site they are usually the same overprice value.
I suggest going through http://www.monoprice.com/

I don't know if they ship to Canada as they are offline for the moment.
