I don't really mind...
'cept when the group I'm following is being beaten by some random new group >_<
It's usually quality over speed releases for me anyways, so I usually stick with one group.

I voted "They should combine their efforts" although I know it's easier said than done.
The ideal solution would be to work on different projects, there is so many manga left unscanlated. Εven if they're not as famous they might become better known thanks to the scanlation.
Been there, read that

Me as a group's staff -- not a Shounen group:
-Older group: Some of you just don't understand how troublesome a joint can be with different standard and most importantly different 'habits'. Why would we want to use bad, inaccurate translations or bad, unacceptable editing? Although some random new groups didn't even ask us anything at all, they just went ahead and released the next chapter out of the blue. We 'own' that title, we worked on it first (don't throw stones yet. We know we really don't and that this whole owning stuff is ridiculous, but getting emotional and possessive is inevitable when you personally care about a certain title and we always do, otherwise we wouldn't have started working on it). The newer group loves it because we made the scanlated chapters available or made the mangaka known to them, and now they want to 'claim' it as theirs? It's not like we want to delay releasing, but we have some problems and there are many other titles to take care of. Not that we're THAT slow. Why are we forced to be so speedy when we're doing this for free in our free time, with utmost respect and love for the mangaka and their works? The other group's work is just too terrible to bear (at least from our point of view but hey, our world is wholly constructed by our perception of it), and it'd feel almost like a sin not to release a 'better' version or at least try to. Besides, to stop doing something half-way really isn't our thing, so we're not going to drop it. I voted "One group should be enough".
-Newer group: The old, probably dying, slow group isn't releasing any new chapter since 1900. We don't know what happened to them, we asked but they wouldn't answer. Perhaps they've lost most of their staff members. We offered joint because we do respect them and are thankful for their past effort, but it seemed like they consider us inferior and wouldn't even think about using our translations and/or editing. It's sad how they look down on us. Do you expect us to wait forever and ever before seeing another chapter scanlated? No way. We love this manga and would like to share the rest of it with everybody before the Armageddon strikes. If that other group currently don't have the time or resources to release the next chapters this century, why don't they just give way to those who do? Isn't the goal to spread the manga love? I'd vote One Group for One Chapter, no need for re-releasing scanlated chapters.
Me as a reader: I don't really care, just give me the manga.
There must be some (many) other scenarios. Except for the 'me as a reader'.

It's always encouraging as a reader to see a bunch of groups piling onto one series. If one is too slow, there's always another available. If one did a crap translation/cleaning/editing job, then you can always go to the other. Voted competition is always good for that reason.
Sadly most series just can't maintain that kind of support. Groups seem to hate competition and many have tough enough times maintaining themselves, much less cooperating with others. Thankfully, so long as they are active and maintain a reasonable amount of quality, one group per series is normally enough.
As for parasitic groups, I do not mind them so long as they are actually serious about a series. If an old group loses momentum, one shouldn't blame others for looking to pick up where they left off. Just popping in and doing a few chapters before imploding is more than a little annoying though. Seeing a series go cold because an original group gives up and the parasite dies really is discouraging. Thankfully, the original usually wakes up and shrugs off parasites or one of the parasites establishes itself as a decent group and diligently pursues a given series.

They should just combine the efforts...ESPECIALLY in the shounen manga area. >__>
There's just way too many groups doing one project. I still don't understand WHY they would want to work on a manga that 5 other groups are already working on and releasing...
All I see is them saying "Blah blah, I can do better quality, etc." >_> And they end up being a crappy speed scan group.
I actually thought the same but I've noticed a trend with newer shounen groups: They work on series that have more than two groups already working on them. Why? For popularity, obviously. As useless as I see this, it is very effective as you can see from current poll status. Some people just want their manga, newer groups often work at a better speed, so they give what others ask of them, fast releases. Doing so already guarantees that the group will gain some fans/supporters.
I mean Shounen mangas are already seen as more successful than other genres. Working on popularity always brings results. O_O
Anyway, I voted for combing group efforts. There's just too many groups working on those popular shounens. >.>

I chose "I don't care, just give me manga", because as long as one group is sticking with a certain manga, then it shouldn't matter. People already read/download scanlations from only one group that they trust, so it seems pointless complaining about how many groups are doing a certain manga.
The only exception I can see though is if they dropped a manga no one else scanlated and THEN started scanlating a manga that has a ton of groups on it already.

Hmmm...To me, if there is already another group out there having frequent releases of a series, and good quality, there really isn't a NEED for another group to take on the series. Especially if it's a series that is far along already (unless the previous releases were LQ.) If a group has a release monthly, and another group can provide faster and higher quality releases, then why not? shrug

What about ALL the other GOOD mangas that never are scanlated because they are not popular YET.
I hate to see a lot of groups working on the same CRAP (see sig) while A LOT of good titles get the cold shoulder and are ignored... wouldn't you want a few of the mangas in your WISH list to be scanlated?
HECK with all the time that is spend (WASTED!!!) on already "popular" titles we would probably enjoy 2 or 3 chapters of 75% of the mangas in this site >_<
Scan groups SHOULD, work on projects they enjoy, BUT if said projects already has 2 or 3 groups working on them, then why not look for something else? there are a TON of good mangas "most likely Manhwa" that would be very popular if they got the chance.
