A coward wouldn't choose new weapons over freedom. He's won 7 times, even if he's a self-serving character that lets everyone else die first, he's not a Nishi-type.

Nishi is a sadist so it could happen. Our nishi just happens to be by himself so he has a chance to die more easily when the Possible 7 Won Nishi could be addicted to killing so he doesnt need freedom?

I'm sorry, I'm sort of confused as to what you're trying to say. If I'm reading this correctly (and I'm really not sure, this is confusing me a bit), you're suggesting that because he's sadistic/psychopathic he could be addicted to killing and not want to leave the game as a result? While I suppose that would be a possibility, I think you can still be a badass with that kind of personality.

Look at it this way, even Nishi wanted freedom, and that's why he was doing all that stuff, regardless of his sadistic tendencies. This guy doesn't care about freedom, he either just liked killing stuff or wants to actually defend the planet. Either way, the extra weapons let him be more powerful than everyone else. I think it's safe to say he won't be cowering in a corner. No matter what he likes to fight.

EDIT: The testing idea is kind of cool too. I would actually consider that to be a badass type of thing to do.

Because in the real world, he's a coward. The real world isn't about points. In the gantz world, he is able to have pride and respect of being able to complete the game several times. Without it, he may not be a person of value.
