This is some kind of a made up problem. It doesn't matter what size the group is, if someone asks you to work on something you don't like, you're always free to say no. If you think that merely asking somehow infringes on you freedom, I would suspect that you simply don't work well with others.
The benefits of big groups are obvious -- it's far easier to find people and resources you need for the projects you like to run smoothly. If you're not willing to do every scanlator position yourself, then the bigger your group is the better for you.
