well i was thinking about making a thread about this a long, long time ago but it seemed a bit illogical back then...

i was wondering since i have watched inuyasha, saiunkoku monogatari, hakushaku to yousei and fushigi yuugi...and as you can notice they are all traveling females in ancient times...now the thing i was really wondering about is that how deal with their menstruation!! i mean they are travelling with guys and ya know there arent any napkins and tampoons at that time...

well i was just wondering...please dont make fun of me...im just curious...expecting serious responses not sarcasm... 🙂

They might have used rags. I'm actually serious. 😐 Or some type of cloth. And before cloth, they might have used leaves or just stayed in their huts 'till it was finished?

But yeah, you don't exactly see manga characters go to the bathroom or other similar activities like that.

as for the topic, we've also seen some manga scenes where female characters 'FAINTED' when they're having PMS (e.g Antique romance, Shinobi no onna, Otoko Hime to Mahou no Lamp). lol, that's so stupid.

and oh! Kaska from Berserk also shown having PMS and it seems that she didnt wear anything underneath her armor. (unless if Guts took that rag out when he disrobed her) .___o

But it does depend on culture. I did find this site though that further explains with rather 'detailed' procedures, what they used (and how they made use of the blood) in ancient times.

c'mon this is something you will never see in animes/mangas [except hentai perhaps?] so the idea of menstruation and such -and the bonners the guys probably get [c'mon?] and the fact that all these characters won't get laid in a near future is never gonna show since this isn't the type of anime that shows this..type of thing.

everytime i watch naruto and d.gray man or some other adventureous manga, i always tell my self "these guys will never get laid, how sad.." so yea..it's not something that will be highlighted...

I think the women back then would use an almost diaper-like cloth under their clothes. And I think tampons and pads were created a surprisingly long time ago! But yes, it must have been tough back then. Even more embarrassing, too. 😔

And to reply to Hermit-chan, my sister gets very violent periods. She hasn't fainted, but she's been bedridden with cramps and has even thrown-up from the pain. It can be very painful, but it affects every woman differently. :/

I have an interesting answer for you.

I've read a book about the first Homo Sapiens. It was a novel but the author did a lot of researches. Everything was just very detailed and it talked about the menstruations in details too.

The way she dealed with it was that she had a piece of rabbit fur (or any other soft fur) she put in her pants/clothes or tied to her (cause sometime just going around almost nude) to absorb the blood (It's very absorbing), and sometime she would take it off, wash it and herself, then put a new one (while the last one was drying, cause of course, she can't kill new animals everytime)

So in the most ancient times, that how they did. The ancestor of our modern sanitary towels.

For later time, I guess they used similar methods and I also know the first tampons (they were made with different material of course) we invented quite soon in history.

So... Just find any absorbant material and use it.

Today, I know some girls in Africa just do nothing, sit in front of their hut =( (Cause I saw an advertisement about sending sanitary towels to poor girls to let them go to school everyday, normally)

o.o I think that might be a little late. Although it has been said that a long time ago girls got their periods a lot later than they do now.

I remember in inuyasha, at one point where Kagome's bag got spilled out, there was something that resembled a tampon case 😀

But yeah, if a girl goes into the past, she'd probably do whatever it was girls did, and hopefully it wasn't sit in front of her hut and wait it out.
