So apparently there are 56 ethnic groups in China! And people thought they were just all Chinese, but they are different. A majority of what we come in contact with are Han family Chinese as they make the majority population. Some ethnic groups immigrated to China centuries ago, others were there at the start of human civilization. So to all the Chinese people on this site, what Chinese ethnic group are you? The following site provides nice photos of each.
Boy, that's a huge list!

Actually, there're more "ethnic minorities". Too bad they were "outlawed" by China or if not, forcefully integrated into other "ethnic groups".

Really? It seems from what I have researched, the grouping is completely voluntary. If you want to register as Han, you can or whatever. The only issue about ethnic group in China right now are ground disputes. Some ethnic groups are claiming that the land they live over does not belong to China, even though technically the land was long part of China for the last 800 or so years. [Especially so during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasty]
But I'm not going to go into this political issue lol, this is just for people to identify themselves with their culture root. As expected, a large majority of Chinese on this site is Han. I wonder if we will never get others. 😀

Han through and through.
But that's still too general, since the Han people are categorized by their dialects.
Mom's Cantonese while dad is Hakka.
Which makes me...A hybrid?
Mandarin is rarely spoken at home, since only my sister and I went to Chinese schools.
The language spoken at home is either English or the two dialects.

I'm Han Chinese, part Hakka and part Teochiu.
Went to Saturday school for Mandarin when I was little but I stopped, so I've been raised to speak only Teochiu and understand bits of Cantonese. Totally forgot my Mandarin, but I'm taking it up again.
My Hakka side was lost in my dad's side where only my grandma speaks it.

The vast majority of Chinese people will probably fall under Han ethnicity. Some dialects/languages are specific to certain ethnic minorities, but most will still be Han. It's irrelevant whether you speak Taishanese (which is descended from Cantonese) or Shanghainese or whatever. You could call it the "original" ethnic group, I guess.

Lol, I don't know about that. I think China's ethnic race Han has been mixed for centuries and centuries. Chances are most Han are already mixed a bit, even if they did migrate to another country within the last 200 or 300 years or so. 5000 years is a long time for cultural mixing. 😀 unless it's one of those groups that doesn't allow marriage outside of their ethnic groups....
