Maki Murakami made her manga debut in the 1995 April issue of shoujo magazine Kimi to Boku. Her work was titled Narushisuto No Higeki, roughly translated as 'The Tragedy of a Narcissist'. One year later, Maki Murakami began the series, Gravitation, which brought her her widest audience. Aside from the Gravitation manga, Maki Murakami is also the artist for all of the Gravitation Remixes, a doujinshi series that follows the relationships between her various Gravitation characters in very graphic sexual detail under the pen-name "Gangstar Yoshio".

Her doujinshi circle is called Crocodile-Ave., and has published various doujinshi, especially for her series Gravitation. She sometimes writes under the name, Gangstar Yoshio when authoring doujinshi. She also has a child.

Maki's art style stands out with her exaggerated gooey crying faces and random gag comedy scenes.
