Description
From JShoujo Scans:
Kanako is the resident class outsider. She has no friends, and her classmates talk about her behind her back calling her a "downer." However, she wasn't always like this.
Back in elementary school, she was a cheerful, outgoing girl who loved to smile. This all came to an end one day when Eiji, the younger brother of her school tutor and a classmate of hers, told her that she looked ugly when she smiled. Even though he moved away soon after, she took his insult to heart and it's been two years since anyone's seen her smile.
Now that Eiji's back in town, what will become of h... More...

It's a mystery why this manga doesn't have a pyschologoy tag, when it deals with issues like childhood trauma, peer pressure, and personality disorder. The main girl did developed symptons ofs social anxiety disorder and mild body dysmorphia (hiding her smile). It's not because she's weak or anything, but because she faced those social failures too early in her life, her personality became like that as self-defense mechanism. Too bad that it's targeted at young girls, who wouldn't appreciate the psychological aspect of this manga.
Interesting for the character growth

The story won't be to everyone's taste, but I think it is worth reading. The art is decent, and the plot is fine (though certainly not anything new or unusual). The main strength of the manga comes from its characterization - although that is also the reason why a lot of people might not like it.
The characters don't start out as all that likable on the surface - the meek and humble main girl, and the immature brat of a main boy. But I liked that the girl never felt she ought to be pitied, nor did she ever smile when any normal person would be sobbing their eyes out, and I liked that underneath the bluster the boy always realizes what he's done when he's messes things up, and works to fix it.
The best part, for me, is how by the end of the fourth volume there is a considerable difference in all characters - both the main, and secondary ones. They've grown and changed over a realistic period of time.

The protagonist, Kanako is suchhhh a freaking crybaby. I mean seriously! I wouldn't cry when things were misunderstanding. She should've explain properly rather then allow the classmates to gang up on her. And then she stops smiling because over one person?
It's getting annoying to the point I want to throw my computer =-=

one petty thing after another. i dislike the heroine i dislike the hero i dislike the antagonist. and nothing has a chance to be resolved. it's just one bad situation after another. as if drama is all you need to make a story. the sister angle was interesting but the main storyline is just annoying. too bothersome to be bothered with.
