Risa Koizumi is the tallest girl in class, and the last thing she wants is the humiliation of standing next to Atsushi Otani, the shortest guy. Fate and the whole school have other ideas, and the two find themselves cast as the unwilling stars of a bizarre romantic comedy duo.
Lovely Complex Plus is actually volume 17 with the final chapter called Love Com Final. The first two chapters are about before Koizumi Risa and Otani Atsushi met each other. The third chapter is about their first encounter and a little bit of what happens to them after the ending of Lovely Complex.
*Contains a side story called Hoshi ni Natte mo Aishiteru (Even When I Become A Star, I'll Still Love You) in vol 12: Reina wakes up surprisingly in her boyfriend's room. But it seems that she passed away three days ago...
In 2004 Lovely Complex received the 49th Shogakukan Manga Award for shōjo.

Maybe it's because I watched the anime before this (several times), but I couldn't get through the manga, especially since they follow each other so much. I quite enjoyed the anime, but there were moments when I just got tired of Risa and Otani. Date, don't date, but stop being so flip-floppy!
I get feelings aren't so easily returned and it's the whole point of this manga that Risa is persistent in getting Otani to see her as a girlfriend and love her, but geez, it got a bit annoying after a while. The dime-a-dozen moments Risa wanted to give up on Otani I thought "YES! Finally, now he can chase after her" were such let downs!
Risa pursues Otani, Otani ignores her, Risa gives up, Otani says or does something to make her love him again, Risa goes back to pursuing him. Over and over again!
Not that I don't like them I thought they were hilariously adorable and I couldn't wait for them to get together but there are those moments in some mangas/animes where you cover your face in embarrassment for a character and think "what the hell are they doing?"
This one had a lot of that, but I still think it was good. If you're reading or watching this for the first time you'll probably be blown away like I was, if this is your second or third time around you might start having the now-that-i'm-reading-this-again-it's-a-bit-annoying mentality.
But you'll still love it in the end which is why you'll keep returning to it just like me:]
Fun but eventually annoying
This is really a fun read. Especially at the beginning. Especially if you like "bickering love" theme, which I personally find adorable. The problem is though like many shoujo manga eventually the bickering love becomes annoying and the bickering and the chasing themselves turn into a very annoying theme and the "male" lead becomes embodiment of this.

While he is an amusing, lively character trying to overcome his height complex, he eventually becomes an annoying brat even by adolescent standards. The relationship that is both very lovely and funny among the two leads become very emotionally abusive and I am surprised how so most people miss that; a relationship doesn't become abusive only when there is aggressiveness or violence involved, but also when there is emotional pressure and verbal cruelty is involved.
Luckily, it doesn't go very further and may be you are able to write it off as adolescent angst but to be honest for me this ruined the manga. I really expected a lot from this, especially due to the way it started off quite well... Thus I give this a 6 overall, at most.
Hilarious with cute romance
I can't count how many times I laugh while reading this manga. A very cute romance comedy with lots of different events throughout the development of their relationships. It is quite long (17 volumes), but it doesn't make you feel like the author tried to drag it out. I would love to read it even more!!!
Don't quite get the hype...
Around six years ago, I picked up this manga and read it up to volume 12... I can't remember why I dropped it, either do to lack of interest or lack of new chapters. After seeing the constant hype and recommendations, I tried it again just yesterday. I read up to volume 7, but just felt to disinterested and skipped right to the ending. I didn't feel like I missed anything at all...
I quite enjoyed the early stages of the manga, it was funny, spunky, and offbeat. And then around volume 6/7, Risa turned into a complete crybaby, constantly needing the goading of her friends to do anything. I guess the main reason is because I found it hard to identify with the characters. Other than the main two, the rest of the gang lacked personality and development.
Normally when I reread manga, I have a sense that I've read it before, or I know what's coming. With this one, I have absolutely no recollection. Six years after the first read, all I remember about it was that it's a shoujo about a person who's tall and a person who's short. In short (no pun intended), it isn't memorable at all...
That said, the art is lovely, and the humor is nice (though I got bored of it...).
All the high way to Lovely!
I watched first the anime, then the live action movie, and now I've just finished the manga, I Love it so much! This is the kind of Masterpiece Shoujo, that even when you now the story, IT'LL ALLWAYS SURPRISE YOU, and make you laugh OUT LOUD XD, even in the final chapters it keeps surprising me, in it's unique, cute way.

Let me start off by saying: this is the ONLY manga where I've ever still been interested in the story after the two main characters get together. I mean, usually, if the characters get together early on in the story, it becomes entirely uninteresting to me after the case. Not Lovely Complex. Not at all.
This manga is extremely heartwarming, hilarious, adorable, and basically an all-around fluffy dose of happiness. The characters are great, the plot is very well developed, and... it's really just lovely.

Lovely Complex Complex
I loved this manga, absolutely, and after I finished it, I checked out all of Aya Nakahara's other works and they were maybe not as good, but still, amazing. I love how the manga takes time for love to grow, with unpredictable settings...Unlike other shoujo manga with their bright personalitied girls Risa, seems to actually have some pride. She won't cling and cry all the time around Ootani. She'll act angry when she's out there, and cry when shes alone. And I felt so good when when Ootani finally accepted her
One of the best.
I absolutely love everything about Lovely Complex. Risa is a character that isn't annoying, but she's genuinely funny and bubbly. You find yourself rooting for her even though she's goofy and a bit strange. Ootani is sometimes insensitive to Risa's feelings for him, but you can tell he's a good guy and starting to change his attitude towards her.
It's a heart-warming manga that makes you laugh, cry, and go "Aww!"
I started out watching the anime series first, which was also great. Lovely Complex is a wonderfully crafted manga that I would recommend to all shoujo lovers. The characters are loveable, the art is pretty great, and it seriously makes you laugh out loud.
Another thing that's so amazing about this manga is that it balances angst with humor so well.

When Risa is first rejected by Otani, she's crying buckets and it's so heartbreaking. But then Nakao-chi says he wants kuma curry all of a sudden, to which Nobu-chan replies, "Darling, just stop talking."

I think this manga/ anime is one of the best i have read and watched. It makes you laugh out loud, cry, and have those heart warming moments. The best thing about this is probably that its so hilarious and great in every single chapter.
hillarious and cute
This manga is hillarious and the drawing style is cute yet simple. Although this manga contains cliche's and the generic shoujo formula, the characters and art are what made it work. This is why character development is so crucial. I loved the characters, including the side characters as well. I would recommend this if you're looking for a funny, highschool shoujo.
