Description
Kurogane Hayate finds herself in a dilemma. Her twin sister, Nagi, is recovering from an injury and needs someone to go to school in her place. Little did she know, the school was based on a "Swordswoman League," where everyone participates in what are called Duels for Stars with their sisters-in-arms, shinyuu, in order to gain prestige, money, and power.

Her first encounters with the students at this new school range from intimidating, such as with the Student Council President, Amachi Hitsugi and her shinyuu, Miyamoto Shizuku, to completely awe-inspiring, such as the hot-headed but extremely experienced (shinyuu-less) Mudou Ayana. At first Hayate thinks she can get away without participating in the Duels for Stars, but the first day she comes home, the orphanage she cares for deeply is a complete wreck...

And there you have it: after switching magazine it became duller and duller (saved only by Amachi Hitsugi) to the point that the author doesn't really know what to throw in anymore to keep the series going.

Also, while turning page after page I could hear the author screaming "Own, come oooon! let me draw some girls about to make out and/or throwing each other love/hate/whatever-as-long-as-they-interact-with-passion glances!! Pllleaaase!! ", but they won't let her like in the first volumes and she has to come up with shonen moves and tired humor.

If you're looking for a quick, casual read which manages to balance silly (and occasionally perverted) humour with dashes of serious drama and a few coming-of-age-related emotional conflicts, Hayate x Blade is an excellent choice of manga.

Each character's part in the story is steadily developed without compromising their personalities in the slightest - and as silvermatthieu noted in his comment, even the side-characters receive an amount of page-time appropriate for enabling the readers to understand their attitudes and motivations.

Unlike John21, I actually found myself liking Hayate on the long run; despite her naivety and obvious lack of intelligence, she still has a good heart and a level of consideration for her fellow swordswomen that other, cleverer, characters do not. Therein, I don't find her 'nauseating' in the slightest.

The plot, especially the setting of the school they attend, is extremely unrealistic; but it makes for an appropriate background considering the mood and themes Hayashiya Shizuru is aiming for. I do agree with Yeran, though, where she notes that the mangaka's sense of humour is an acquired taste.

As for the GL - it has, and always will, remain at a purely subtextual level. It is a matter of perspective whether you choose to see this manga as a shoujo-ai or not. Personally, I prefer to think of it as simply being close friendship / partnership.
Therefore, you need not be a shoujo-ai fan to enjoy Hayate x Blade. You simply have to possess the willingness to contend with a females-only caste.

Sometimes dramatic without being too serious, sometimes funny - a nice combination.

Hayashiya-sensei is especially good in creating new side-characters for the side-stories.
They all have special character traits and unique motivations which makes the school feel more 'alive' than in other Mangas, where side-characters are just single-use NPCs.

the action scenes are stupid, i mean it was funny and ok at the beginning but then it got too much overdramatic. I personally did not like the main character at all. Shez too much of a goody good and way too nice and trusting. Her stupidity was just nauseating really.

This is, simply, action-manga crack with GL undertones. Or overtones. I never really got the difference. Anyway, it's an awesome manga, if you get Hayashiya Shizuru's sense of humor. Otherwise, I guess it would seem stupid.

I personally love it.
