Not really as bad...

April 24th, 2017, 3:53pm the previous comments have made it out to be. I suppose you could say the greatest flaw in Outer Zone is that it's falsely advertised as horror. (Whether this was the case in Japan is unknown to me, but it certainly is true for English manga databases -- I've altered the genre tags here on MU so that they're more appropriate) There isn't any horror here: just a set of supernatural stories where the characters encounter various monsters/curses/magical objects/ghosts and, through typical heroic goodwill, perseverance and good fortune, somehow manage to overcome them and earn their happy endings. Not every chapter ends well, of course, but most of them do.

As a result, the stories tend to be a tad preachy and the majority of the MC's are goodie-two-shoes. But what appeals to me in Outer Zone isn't the people or the morals: it's seeing what new and unusual supernatural devices the mangaka can come up with, not to mention the methods of defeating/conquering them. Since each chapter is a stand-alone featuring all manner of odd things, I've been fairly entertained so far (having read up to the latest scanlated chapter).

The only recurring character, Misery, isn't a neutral observer -- she actually interacts with humans and tries to draw them into "The Outer Zone," with varying degrees of success. I found her fairly amusing, myself.

Overall: you won't miss out on anything by foregoing this series, but I also don't believe you'll regret picking it up for the rest of your life like the two previous commenters seem to be implying.

Very very mediocre. If by some chance you happen to stumble upon this as your first horror manga then maybe it could scare you a bit, might even make it hard to fall asleep. If you've read good horror manga before and want a quick fix: Turn back! This has nothing for you.

All the stories are predictable and not enough innocent people are getting unjustly tortured. That may sound creepy, but you'll have to read it to find out just how boring it is to have only the evil people lose. At first I thought the mangaka was messing around with the readers, giving us some happy endings before getting real dark. But no, almost every story has a happy ending. Some of them are even "Ride off into the sunset with the perfect girlfriend, new car and a million dollars in cash" happy.

tldr: If you're not bored out of your skull, skip it!

Oh and SliverStorm is unfortunately very right. The "hostess" is basically a character in the manga. In most of the stories she's annoyingly present and directly affecting the plot, even changes the damn outcomes. That's a big horror no no. She's not the "hostess" she's the main freakin character.

It's a bunch of supernatural horror-esque stories that tries a little too hard to push some sort of moral. Bad guys almost always lose. If it's this predictable, what's the point? Another annoyance is that the narrator plays an active role in the stories. You just don't do that in these kind of stories. You just don't.
