Suwa Daisuke is an ordinary, but popular, high school student. One of his classmates, Aikawa Hinako, is somewhat fearful of men and because she ran away from just his attempt to touch her hair, he states to one of his buddies, that she is the only one he wouldn't date, unaware all of the people in his classroom could hear them, including Hinako.

Daisuke's attitude changes after he unintentionally hears a shocking truth that she confesses in an abandoned church. His former annoyance turns to compassion and concern. Hinako is unaware that he knows her 'little' secret. Believing him to have no romantic interest, she becomes more relaxed and comfortable in his company. Their relationship faces a lot of obstacles, including jealous classmates.

Not my preference but worth a look

It's odd for me to read this one from Kusunoki Kei since I'm used to her gag manga. Even though there is next to nothing to laugh about you do see her comedic art style peek through here.

In a sense you could see the same type of pacing for the story in that it goes relatively quickly. This isn't that good since much of the time it is rapid shots of drama that can leave a person a bit dazed. A good read from chapter to chapter though since it maintains interest fairly well.

The (main) characters themselves are fairly complex considering the quick progression of the story. There are times you can hate them and others where you can like them. Most of the time, though I just pity them. The world of Bitter Virgin has been pretty hateful so far.

As the titles said, not my preference but worth a look.

Despite it's dark theme, I find this manga to be quite uplifiting. The relationship between Daisuke and Hinato is simple at the moment, yet very sweet. I can't wait to read the next chapter.

Edit: OH MY GOD IT ENDED, AND SO SOON. Yet I think it was the smartest move. One of the very few shoujo like mangas that didn't piss me off because of the characters indecisiveness. Highly recommended.

Put away your Super-Critic Goggles for a bit and read a story for the sake of the story. Admittedly, Bitter Virgin is lacking in a few key areas -- the characters lack some depth and uniqueness, for example, but that's far overshadowed by the significance of the story being told. This story deals with a couple of VERY touchy subjects (rape and stillbirth), and does so gracefully, and in a way that lets you really feel connected to the characters.

The ending was unrealiztically optimistic, but if it was accurate to real life, probably most people would be angry. The type of treatment Aikawa experienced does not leave one so well-adjusted to people and society in general, much less able to function normally in intimate relationships.

This is an accurate and moving story worth anyone's time, and you should read it.

The story is touching... I think it's shoujo, as evidenced in I think chapter 6. I dunno, maybe I'm wrong. Anyways, it's nice to see a guy that places the well-being of a girl above his own. Very chivalrous. The epitome of a tragedy, that's for sure, but I hope the series picks-up again soon. It's addictive.

I love this manga, and what makes it so sweet are the great characters.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
their not actually great per say, when you take into account that the main chic wasn't tough/bull-headed enough to NOT get raped twice, or big sis getting pregnant for a man that she KNEW would never be hers (and I could go one some more, but I think the points been made). What makes the characters so great in my opinion is that once their minds are made up, they don't stop trying, even when the situations looking bad.
I can't agree with the previous comment because the manga IS NOT telling you how to feel about the characters. It's just showing you how that bad stuff does happen (to good and bad) people, and your not always completely helpless in a 'hopeless' situation.

I think this could be classified as josei, actually, since it incorporates elements from Mars and Kiss & Never Cry (both josei series), the style is definitely shoujo, and female issues are the primary focus. Perhaps it wasn't marketed as such because it has certain harem aspects and deals primarily with one boy's nascent sympathy for the opposite sex.

Anyway, isn’t this manga a little overrated? The mangaka’s approach is heavy-handed and generic. Little is known about the characters other than that they relate to each other as survivors, sympathizers, or victimizers. Moreover, we’re told how to feel: admire the heroine for remaining a serene angel despite the history that should have corrupted her; admire the hero for loving a blameless victim and teaching her that not all men are evil.

If you like this sort of thing, read Thomas Hardy.

I've been reading shoujo and josei manga for years, and I've never been a fan of seinen. Tried to read this just to pass time, but got addicted after reading a chapter. I think this is a lot better than most of the manga I've read. It has depth and emotion that I can't even see in other works. I definitely recommend this to readers of any genre. (since i'm not a fan of this genre myself). because of this, i think i'll try reading some seinen manga for a while. ^_^

this is definately a well told story, it is rather sad but the characters are endearing and there are several places to find humor, i can't wait for the conclusion of this series, i'm glad that it doesn't seem to be too long before there is some sort of resolution. very much worth the read.

It made me cry

Yeah, it made me cry a couple of times. It's a sad manga, but yet I'm hooked onto it. Usually, I don't like mangas to have such serious themes - it takes the fun out of reading them, you know? - but Bitter Virgin is a great one. It makes you constantly aware of the tension that surrounds the characters. I love it.

The ending was brilliant. It wasn't a happily ever after, but it was damn satisfying. It's realistic, and the way that both of them realises that is realistic, too. I don't know, but I loved the ending.
