Has flaws, but definitely a good read by jactehsniper on November 16th, 2009, 1:16pm

Ok, so, straight to the point then...

If you're going to be shallow and base everything on how it looks, this manga is not for you. AT ALL. The art isn't anything to look at... It's not in the least bit pretty. But to be perfectly honest, it suits the story. It's portraying the darker traits of people and is very much a psychological manga about cheats, liars, and power hungry schemers all duking it out against each other with a huge amount of debt hanging over their heads --hardly a pretty tale full of singing and joy and bishies and if that's what you're after I suggest you walk away. Now.

Oh, and if you're after blood and guts or lots of action. Walk away.

If you're after something exciting and suspenseful that has you stopping to think about whats going on and reveling at how clever some of the points were (especially when you haven't thought of them yet), then stay right where you are! This is right up your alley, my friend.

Yes, after 90 chapters there are a few repetitions. The scenarios all have a bit in common, but when you consider that it's a game, the rounds are all going to be similar to some degree. Afterall, what game changes so much that there's nothing each level has in common? None, I tell you.

The explanations get tedious, but only if you read the chapters back to back in one go. You have to remember that this is a serialized series, so to keep readers from being confused or forgetting what happened the repetitiveness is necessary to a certain degree. I will admit that the line has been crossed a bit here and there, but nothing to fuss over extensively.

As for the characters; Nao makes mistakes that she should really learn from, but makes again anyway. But she's a sweet girl and despite her naivety and gullibility, she really is an intelligent person when she needs to be. Akiyama continues to always a have a near flawless plan for victory, but he does have some weaknesses. Fukunaga seems to sway from ally to enemy at every blink of the eye. They're all good, likable characters with their own faults and quirks, just like rest of us.

I couldn't put it down when reading it and if this sounds like something you'd like, then I can almost guarantee you'll be the same.

Worst ever. by llbloodll on November 9th, 2009, 8:42pm

Storyline: Ok, lets start with the good - the story has a good premise - human nature's variable nature and how people can become corrupt. Thats where the good ends.

Here's serveral things that put me off...
1) The characters are garabage: all the characters in the manga are blantly predictable. To add onto Xiledragon's comment I completely agree that the characters in the manga seem very hollow, and the mangaka tries to mask any real character depth with "smart-appeal".

2) The artwork is just gross. The facial designs are just fugly, and by far the ugliest manga I have ever ever read. Its like a badly drawn shojo manga merged with Family Guy or something. The detail is equally poor - and the mangaka attempts to poorly compensate by filling his pages with endless "smart" babble.

3) The smart appeal - This manga heavily tries to mimic a death-note style approach by giving 'complicated' scenarios/puzzles for the viewer the solve. But falls headfirst when the scerarios are copied repeatedly over 30 chapters - and drone on and on. The manga attempts to critque society at first, but buries itself in useless explanations as it progresses.

Overall: Not worth reading at all. If I can stop a couple people from reading this then I'd be happy. By the way a lot of the comments here are based off the first 30 chapters, this review is written after chapter 90, and suffice to say, nothing has happened so far. Save yourself and go read any other manga that attempts to crtique the darker side of humanity (Berserk, Gantz, Death Note, GTO even, Team Medical Dragon, etc).

it's great by xdeLiiRiOus on August 29th, 2009, 1:30pm

I really enjoyed reading this manga. the characters are well created. I think some people are just too fast to jump the gun, not giving Nao the chance to prove herself. she is trusting, honest, and unconditionally forgiving, everything we humans lack. she does everything whole-heartedly, and I really do admire her. (never giving up on people). she is very naive, because of her honest nature, but that's what makes this manga the Liar Game. she is a lot more perceptive than she lets on. nao and akiyama is a really complimenting duo. because he's more of the opposite, wanting to trust people but a lot more careful and calculating about it. as the manga carries on, you can definitely see nao growing, she's still innocent, but she does know things.

the story is well-done (at least in my opinion). the characters are well-developed and you can see their personalities, they're consistent. I do reccommend this manga to people who are looking for a good suspense. it's not ridden with romance (I'm a shoujo lover), but there are very light and subtle hints, which I really do like smile

Amazing! by Sailor Mitsuki on August 16th, 2009, 3:03pm

Before I start out, I want to say that I am an avid-shoujo manga reader. The only other mangas I have read and liked besides the shoujo genre is Death Note, and, well, this manga: Liar Game. From the first chapter it's already filled with different events taking place. The logic forces you to think, and it explains each situation carefully so it's hard to get confused.

Many people have compared this to Death Note, and other than the fact that Akiyama shares one trait like L -- a genius -- from my view, nothing else is really that similar. And in my opinion? Liar Game surpasses Death Note. Not by a lot, because honestly they're both great mangas, but I think Liar Game has more edge and logic.

The art isn't too great, a bit below average, but the characters compensate for that. Akiyama, the mastermind, is obviously by far my favorite character in the series. He's amazingly smart, yet sometimes makes mistakes in his calculations which I find totally makes him not cliche. And then there's Nao. She's actually a good character in the series in my opinion. She actually thinks, and although she might not be as intelligent as Akiyama, she tries her hardest, and actually a few times comes out with a solution.

Even if you are a shoujo fan like myself, or any other genre, I highly recommend Liar Game. You won't be disappointed--this manga is a must-read. (I'm surprised this manga hasn't been licensed yet. It definitely should be. ^^)

Brilliant. by calstine on July 25th, 2009, 11:17pm

This manga is one of my all-time favourites. It is an in-depth analysis of human mentality, carried out by way of a series of well thought-out and mentally-stimulating games; games where there is a lot more at stake than the players' pride or enthusiasm.
Contrary to the popular opinion around here, I find the main character, Nao, to be an interesting person, very well -suited to be the protagonist of a story depicting the real world, where deception and betrayal is part of human nature. She brings the readers an important message about the survival of a sheep among a pack of wolves.
As for Akiyama- there's no questioning the fact that he's the most popular character, but I think that for once, the most-loved guy in a story actually deserves that position. He's not some kind of evil genius out to the capture the world, no is he an idealistic hero dedicated to bringing salvation. He's a guy who does what he thinks is right, no matter who he has to deceive in the process; and he has the intelligence and tact to do it. And despite appearing quite ruthless at times, he is very conscientious.
The side characters are also depicted very well, each of them portraying different 'types' of people, and what those different types do when faced with difficult decisions.
The art may be off-putting for some, but I think it matches the mood of the story very well.
If you're tired of the same old cliches and long for something new and intellectually-stimulating, this is definitely recommended!

Nice try, but nothing outstanding by XileDragon on July 25th, 2009, 1:44pm

It's got a nice premise, and the build up isn't that bad, but I feel like the characters are missing something. They simply aren't that cool, or easy to identify with, or likable.

The guy's alright, but aside from his obvious smarts, we don't know much else about his personality, which leaves him quite bland for now. The Death Note comparisons really stop at the smarts, because otherwise, Akiyama still has ways to go before catching up to Light's appeal.

As for the other characters? No comment.... is what I would like to say, but I can't help myself: the female protagonist is just plain ANNOYING, wow. Terrible.

To be honest, I think the mangaka does a good job in making the games and strategies look smart and complicated, but they really aren't. If you think about it a little, some of the stuff really isn't all that impressive.

In the end, Liar Game is a decent read for those with time on their hands.

this is smart by robbit on July 20th, 2009, 8:38am

this is the smartest, most clever manga i have ever read. the plot is original and interesting, and the characters are unique and powerful.
maybe not the most philosophical manga out there, but it is definitely the one that makes you use your brain the most.
not a bad chapter anywhere. its like the most stimulating read ever
i strongly suggest this for fans of Detective Conan (especially the ones that try to solve the mysteries before Conan reveals them)

Love the Game by comel on July 20th, 2009, 5:58am

Basically I like this idea of manga. Liar Game hehe...
The story is very interesting. And mostly the male char! That's cool way to be a hero!
I watched the Dorama long ago... I kinda forgot the ending story was but around Game 3. So now I read the manga.
I don't know why the author choose to make the female char absolutely very very honest... Sometimes It doesn't make sense that anybody lives on earth could be like that character. I agree that honest, kind, trustful are good point to be human. But I think she's way too idealize... And this heroine is too much depending to the Male Char (Akiyama)! OMG.
And Akiyama always said that it's not true that she didn't help, she help him lots too.... But what I see:
She's like a rabbit in the chain of food or a guinea pig or using as a bait. Somehow her good stupid characteristics is what i hate most in this manga... I can't stand it when she said that she wanted to save everyone (she's act like a god in a depth of hell). Around ch 66... I dropped it. It's just not suit my taste...
Don't read it if u like the female char:
Spoiler (highlight to view)
The reason i dropped it: She wanted to save everyone, but afterall it was just self-satisfying because she didn't want to feel that she can't help others. She just wanted to help people although her own self good for nothing and her effort to help them is at least minimum effort to save others-- begging. She beg to save herself, then she beg to save others, she beg again, again, again..... The male char do the most job.
Last... what I can't tolerate more from her egoistic that she asked her team mate (the transvertite guy), that already had win the game... to make a draw so she can save the opponents. Oh such an egoistic nature in an angel mask... She should help with her own strength. Don't rely to others, her kind favor is like.. pushing burden to others. These people who entered in Liar Game, including her, by their own foolishness, curiosity, or even greed had agreed to participated in this game. Of course it's too idealize if everything goes okay, this idea of the manga is dark (Liar, cheating, manipulating) but the story goes on pure white.... there's no loss, danger, risk or suffering.
And mostly this manga will end with her as the saviour of the mankind.

Really Underrated by fish_and_kat on April 18th, 2009, 2:54am

A really awesome manga!! The plot is smart and the art is great as well. The male character reminds me of Light a little bit. But ugh, sometimes I just really feel like giving the female character a good smack in the head LOL ..The way she just cries every time she got tricked!!! But overall, I reaaaaaallly love this manga. If you're into psychological manga I highly recommend this one. And why this manga isn't getting the popularity it deserves is beyond me

i enjoy reading this by roboslant on April 14th, 2009, 6:50pm

I actually like Liar Game a lot. The way that the games are cleared are pretty plausible in real life (nothing that is too unrealistic, I think). I don't regularly read mysteries/solve puzzles/etc. myself so I wouldn't know anything about the difficulty of the games. But each game keeps me pretty entertained.

I'm kind of surprised that so many people seem to hate Nao. I personally like her. Yes, she is abnormally honest/easily fooled and depends on Akiyama a lot, but I think her character development is something that could get really interesting.

As for the actual plot, I still feel that there should be a stronger reason other than just to earn enough money to get out of the game, but I guess that's something that might happen later.

For now I'll just continue to read this.
