i've got to admit, i had high expectations for this cause people were saying its "real romance" and for the first few chapters it was fine and dandy, but it just went downhill for me.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
the guy has no commitment he's just like "its fine like this so just a little longer" NO DUDE YOU PROMISED TO FREAKIN MARRY THE GIRL AND YOU GET SO EASILY SWAYED INTO CHEATING.
i know people are saying its more realistic because of the ending but honestly i thought the characters were all cliche except the main girl. it either bored me to death or just plain pissed me off.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
and the developments into a love triangle seemed super forced, i thought for once there wouldn't be one because the guy had a girlfriend, but nope. he's even a total jerk to her in my opinion.
ultra maniac was my first manga and i still love it so i had really high expectations for this author. i guess im just a little let down.

The story was nice... though it did leave me torn. The art was also really pretty and I have to admit that though I hesitated, I'm glad I read this.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I hated that girl for being so persistent though she knew he had a girl and he's already rejected her before. But at the same time I hated Sousuke for being so weak and giving in to her just because he didn't want to see her cry. I shouldn't have mattered if she cried or not, she's not his girl. But I was happy/sad that Ari made the decision to end the relationship that was causing her so much pain. I can't say that I didn't want them to get back together... I did but then I'm glad she moved on with her life as well.

I went into reading this with a somewhat negative attitude until the latter half, yet I ultimately changed my opinion on it.

At first, I thought that both Sousuke and Ari were ridiculously immature in the relationship until I realized that these are certainly possible choices that anyone would make. I noticed that while the decisions were logically awful, I can see why he or she makes such a decision. Moreover, the decisions were surprisingly "normal" and realistic. I would've liked to see more of each character's motivation behind their action, but the mangaka put a sufficient amount for the reader to infer the thought process.

In the end, my suspicions on what would happen were confirmed, but the mangaka wrapped up the story in a pretty decent way, even if it's obviously not a new idea. It helps that this story was just one volume - no extra frills. In my opinion, a good short story will only have crucial elements for the story to BE a story, and I would say that Cappuccino has exactly that. While this certainly wasn't epic, I did enjoy Cappuccino a lot.

GOOOODDD :<<<< It's SOOO hard to read this. I was GRRRRR!!! So mad. I can't even pretend to be sympathetic towards the guy.
I guess you could say that it's realistic.
I'm reading this solely because it's Yoshizumi-sensei's work. ...

It sure leaves a very strong impression, because every little thing in this manga is real, possible and cruel. But in the end, there is a saying: "When you fall, get up with a smile, and continue forward...", and it surely doesn't refer only to strong people, but everyone smile

I actually really liked this. It wasn't what I was expecting at all, bittersweet is definitely the correct adjective. If you're looking for something nice and fluffy this isn't the story for you, but it's also not really depressing either. It's just realistic in a refreshing way. I really liked the ending too. I was happy with how the female lead grew and changed. smile Had it ended differently, I would have ended up hating her.

The only thing I didn't like was...
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Inaba getting married to a girl he didn't love. I found that really annoying. I didn't want him to end up with Ari either, but still. I wish he would have ended it with that girl to find someone he really loves than marrying her out of pity. I really don't know if that's much better than sousuke's cheating. =/

The thing that annoyed me the most wasn't necessarily the relationship but the weak characters. The last comment was talking about how the characters act in understandable ways but I honestly didn't understand their ways. I do think they were realistic, but I was so annoyed by them.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The guy was weak enough to just give into a girl who pouts, whines, begs, and cries to get her way. Seriously, I would have preferred if he actively sought out an affair than to watch him be so easily manipulated by that girl until he just gave in and had an affair. The main girl was weak because she was too scared to bring up any small problems that bothered her in the relationship and decided to stay in a relationship that wasn't making her happy
. But I won't rate down a manga just because I don't like the characters' personalities. They were interesting to read about and the relationship kept me entertained because it wasn't your stereotypical "because we're so in love everything will magically work out and we'll live happily ever after".

Also, I did like the ending for the most part.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Although I don't agree with Inaba's choice to settle for a girl he didn't love. Why couldn't he search out a different girl than his girlfriend or the lead character and try to find someone he truly could love? But I do like that the main character seemed stronger and that she became satisfied with her career. I know I have no reason to judge, but I don't really understand women whose only goal is to be a housewife.
.

All-in-all I liked it and would recommend it, but for those looking for a cute and upbeat love story, remember the description says "bittersweet"

Realistic Romance

Shoujo manga makes it so easy to forget that there's a real world out there where relationships tend to fail more often than they work out. It's easy, in shoujo, to identify the "right" relationships and the "wrong" ones. Obviously, the "right" ones are the perfect ones and the "wrong" ones are everything else.

Real life doesn't work that way. Things aren't in black and white and nearly all relationships fall into a gray area. In that gray area, you have to make tough choices and sometimes you find things turning out differently than you would have ever expected them to.

The thing I love about this manga is that EVERY character is realistic and acts in an understandable way. People DO cheat (and it often comes about as slowly and subtly as seen here), people DO ignore problems in their relationship in the hopes they'll just go away, people DO settle for second best when they know their true love is unattainable. People do these things every day... They just seem unusual when you see them in a shoujo manga.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
A lot of people here are blasting Inaba for marrying his girlfriend at the end. However, the only alternative for him would be to spend his life alone and lonely, pining for Ari. In the real world, we often can't be with the person we truly want... which is why people settle for the people they CAN be with. It's human nature. No one wants to grow old alone. Inaba is going above and beyond the call of duty (so to speak) by being upfront and honest with his girlfriend from the start. He has basically made the decision to spend his life with someone he cares for and respects, as opposed to spending his life alone. It's a valid decision - and one made countless times by real people in the real world.

I firmly recommend this to anyone who likes a bit more realism and bittersweetness to their romantic manga. Also, fans of Wataru Yoshizumi will probably like this, as well. Her artwork is lovely, as always! smile
