Description
From Kodansha:
Ten-year-old Elin loves her brave and beautiful mother, a gifted beast doctor charged with the care of the Toda—the fearsome giant serpents that the kingdom's warriors ride into battle. Their modest but happy life together is shattered when a mysterious illness fells the entire stable of the prized serpents overnight, and Elin's mother is saddled with the blame. Before she knows it, Elin finds herself cast out from all she has ever known, alone in a faraway land, with only her mother's words and the kindness of strangers to guide her.

I don't usually waiting for a manga that has an anime because I'm bored because it's just the same as the anime. But not this one. While the anime, for me who never watch something that long, beyond words for its epicness, surprisingly the manga doesn't make me bored. Instead, it's so well done. I think that's because, it seems the manga doesn't adapt it from anime, but from the novel itself. That's kinda rare for something that has an anime. It has totally different character design, different culture... it's so refreshing. Though as someone who has watched the anime, I felt things are kinda rushed though, contrary with comments below
The things that bugs me is the mangaka's choice for toning Erin's eye... It doesn't make the special feature of her kin stands out... Well ain't something big tho.
Anyway, for you who search a well done fantasy accompanied with well-done character and plot, this one is very very recommended.

Don't judge it by it's cover
I was not going to read this as well when I saw the cover
but the drawing gives a classic look and are nicely done
the girls are NOT annoying and
the main character has an intrigueing personality
the story has mystery, different and I cant wait for more
why isn't there more !?

i looved the manga, and i realy want to read the novel too but it seams that the novel goes the same as the manga so i dont realy mind but the anime is soooooo boring, finaly at episode 6, things started to move along and it appeared more like the manga so it wasn't so bad. but the manga was much stronger than the anime at the beginning but too bad the manga only has 5 chapters... oh well
AWESOME!

The manga is just beautiful. I saw this years ago but didn't bite it because of the cover of the long nosed guy. Then I saw the manga on a reading site and had to check it out because the art was just my thing. Cute and edgy at the same time. No CLAMP girlies here. The story is unique on its own and the art just adds to it. Love the eyes and the texture of everything. The anime looks so different but at least it got better over time. Still has nothing on the manga though.
HOTDAMMIT!! Why are there only five chapters?? I have to know, does the manga go the same way the anime does? I'm putting off watching the anime because I saw the first episode and was bored out of my mind. The manga is way waaaaaaaaaay better. But dammit, if only I could order the manga online, I would totally buy it already. Thanks etc scans for the chapters.

Much more streamlined. This manga doesnt waste time with idle character development that slowly drags across dozens of episodes like in the anime. Character design is much more edgy and fits better with the themes of the story.
