Description
Tsukiko, thirty-eight, works in an office and lives alone. One night, she happens to meet one of her former high school teachers, “Sensei” in a local bar. Tsukiko had only ever called him “Sensei” (“Teacher”). He is thirty years her senior, retired, and presumably a widower. Their relationship–traced by Kawakami’s gentle hints at the changing seasons–develops from a perfunctory acknowledgment of each other as they eat and drink alone at the bar, to an enjoyable sense of companionship, and finally into a deeply sentimental love affair.

This is available in English as a novel called "The Briefcase". It was a real find for me! Even though I like manga and light novels, I am an old man, and, let's face it, almost all the works in both these genres are aimed at young people, and don't have a lot to say to middle aged and old people.
In particular, manga and light novels tend to take place in a kind of "eternal present". The focus is totally on the today of the story, and the future is only present as hopes and dreams—rather misty things!
But here we have a love affair between a middle-aged woman and an old man. Than means, among many other things, that both parties know there is not much time left for them, or their love. The great virtue of this novel is that it gives the love a special character.
Not your cup of tea, young reader? Consider this: What you know you will not possess forever, you tend to value all the more.
