Ummm... What?

After reading the latest few chapters, I think I might have just lost all my respect for Mashima Hiro. For a while now, the quality of Fairy Tail has been steadily dropping. I stayed with it because I believed the humor was worth reading each new update, because the intros to many arcs are intriguing, because I liked reading Fairy Tail. It was a refreshing break from life, even though I honestly prefer more serious manga.

In the beginning, Fairy Tail is a fun read. Nothing is repetitive, characters are being introduced, arcs explain the stories of the main characters, etc. Sure, there is some fanservice, and for all intents and purposes, seems like pretty much every other battle shounen I had read, but I was interested nevertheless.

Then it starts to get a bit more cliche. Lucy becomes less of a "female lead" and more of a person with giant tits. Big boobs are her entire persona ... Fight scene get a bit repetitive. When we reach the time skip, I quite honestly think I freaked out. Time skips are a big no no for me. It's a stupid, overused way to create drama, to power up the characters (and in this case, the heightened level of power is quickly forgotten) and just NONONONO.

This is when I began noticing things. The Japanese may view manga from a very culturally different standpoint than we. I never quite understood how the same repetitiveness I find in most really famous manga (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, etc.) could still continue to be so successful. However, I think we share one thing in common. We noticed Fairy Tail was not quite up to par anymore.

The mangaka introduces a ridiculous amount of characters, but the plot never seems to move forward. We are left we the same questions as ever. What happened to the dragons? What happened that day? Who is Zeref?

I suppose a drop in the rankings prompted the manga to include so much ecchi. That is simply my best guess. The fanservice has been so abundant lately that the latest few chapters seem to have been literally cut and paste from some hentai I read. I don't know if adding so many boobs would really increase sales and rankings (Porn is available so freely on the Internet?). It has, however, lost one female reader.

Fairy Tail can be summed up in one word; generic

I read Fairy Tail, I still check back for updates every week, but I wouldn't rate it as good.

It's generic shameless fun, nothing more and nothing less. I don't think deeply about it, because if I do, I will probably start disliking the manga.

Fairy Tail is a generic shounen manga about a guild full of 'mages', meaning, people who kick ass with things that cannot be explained with anything else but magic. I don't know about you, but when I think of magic, I think of Harry Potter, you know, people with wands, I don't think of people beating someone down with a fire punch. Anyways, these abilities are never explained in detail, nor are there any limitations on it, except of course, when the plot calls for it.

The main character is Natsu Dragneel, the pink haired boy who is just like any other loud-mouthed idiot from other shounen manga, who gets down to serious business when you hurt his friends. The second main character, who is just useless fanservice, is Lucy Heartfelia, who really only serves to get beaten up and have her clothes ripped up all the time (seriously, the amount of wardrobe changes she goes through only for it to be ruined the next chapter ...). There's not really a plot, other than 'awesome people do awesome stuff and get into awesome fights'. How awesome that is, is very much YMMV.

Right, did I mention Fairy Tail shoves the 'nakama' (for those less inclined with the cliche, it's all about the power of friendship) thing down your throat so much you want to throw up? This is the part where, if you think deeply about Fairy Tail, you'll hate it. If you treat it like the superficial entertainment it is, you'll fair a lot better.

The characters are nothing special, the plot is simply non existent, the fighting abilities are stupid and how powerful they are is based on how many friends they have backing them up, the fanservice (which he tries to hide ...) is stupid (no panty shots whatsoever, but he's okay with drawing every female with huge breast balloons and show them in suggestive poses and make them wear bunny suits, or have their clothes ripped off), and well ... the only thing Fairy Tail has got going is that the art evolved to be pretty damn good looking.

At first the art was just Rave Master all over again (or as people like to say, it looks like One Piece), but now Mashima has a style of his own ... though maybe that has a lot more to do with his assistant, who made Yankee-kun to Megane-chan, which has the same exact art style. But, whatever, the art looks good, and that's really the only positive point of Fairy Tail.

It can also be funny, as proven with chapter 227 Lucy Fire.

But it's mostly just generic shounen entertainment, with a heavy, sickening dose of 'nakama!'.

Read it if you feel like adding another manga to your list.

I really enjoy this series. It has many good qualities, from amazing powers, to exotic locations, to unique and interesting characters. I disagree that this is only a fight manga designed for teenagers, I'm in my twenties and I still like it. I've yet to read a story arc that wasn't important to the story, be it for the development of key characters or to the ultimate evil that is hinted at several times. If you're looking for a good action adventure story with a healthy dash of comedy then look no further. If its not for you, then fine just don't be a jerk about it

I'm 60 chapters in and i don't LOVE the main characters, when there's a massive fight and someone screams something heartfelt i don't get excited i merely keep reading. Fairy-tail lacks a lot of substance. It lacks characters which are original and believable, and probably lacks a lot on an emotional level; like i said i don't feel for the characters. Though i've said all this i guess its ok to read if you're bored or like action mangas but i don't think its for me. Mashima Hiro has got a great initial plot going for him, i just think he's inexperienced in story-telling.

It is comparable to One Piece however it is it's own story. So far the story has been consistent unlike some mangas *cough* Bleach *cough*. This is the first/only manga where I actually like all the characters, they are well designed. The story moves at a faster pace than most mangas of this type, so there is less dull moments. I am going to give it a 10 b/c I don't get bored reading it and there are no characters that I dislike in manga.

Damn this manga would be good if every shounen cliche in history wasn't involved. I mean seriously its so repetitive that I'll tell it to you now, its goes:
Bad guy shows up
Natsu: I'll defeat you with my friends
Bad guy laughs and tells his evil plan
Bad guy kicks fairy tails ass
Nastu: urgh even though I'm almost dead and have no power I'll defeat you with the power of friends
Natsu somehow gets an insane power boost and wins the fight
Bad guy: NOOOO I lost to friendship

I would like this manga a LOT more if it had reasons for fighting besides "Nakama." Actually, sometimes it seems like the only noticeable trait of the "bad guys" is that they don't honor friendship, and Natsu goes crazy because "Nakama" is the only word he knows. I am exagerating, but I do feel that this manga focuses on that a bit too much. Other than that (and the occasional overbearing ecchi), I really enjoy this manga. Give it a read.

I really like Hiro Mashima's artwork, it's good and the characters are good at their own way. But what I don't like is that the story isn't going anywhere. Some arcs are good and entertaining but I feel like it hasn't moved foward. Or it's moving really too slow. And theme is quite same in all arcs. Well its told in differend ways but still it's repeating the same pattern.

Where is Igneel? And when exactly Natsu is going to seach him? Isn't that what the story is about? Or have I understood it wrong..or then there is no plot at all.

But still it is fun and entertaining to read it, and like I said, I like the characters and the artwork is really good. And actually I'm looking foward to see what happens next and what happens to Lucy. But I hope it's something good.

love it... really love it... i also love mashima sensei's assistant's work (yankee kun to megane chan).. i love all the charecters so much. (i love naruto but there are certain naruto characters that piss me off).

.the thing that bugs me is that it's now having a tournament arc just like the rest of the common shounen mangas. But i'm pretty confident that mashima sensei can pull it off well. and it wont end up like a cliche tournament arc bigrazz

I call it confusing because it seems to combine 12-year-old level plot and characters with a mid-teen to late-teen level of ecchi, though not quite enough to gain an ecchi tag.

At the first chapter, I was convinced that this was going to be the next great shounen manga that I read. And it's entertaining enough, I'll give it that. But looking back at the entire series, it's lacking in decent plot, believable characters or decent periodic power-ups (which you desperately need in a battle manga) - most of the power-ups are in effect for one fight only and are achieved due to circumstantial events - it's different, but not in a way that works very well. It's not even that funny in places and the moral messages are cliched and unprovocative.
To be honest, the only reason I was still reading it was because the hype the first chapter generated in me was still strong 3-4 four years on from reading it, though I'm taking a break from weekly reading now. I'll get back to it some point because there are a couple of plot-related loose ends I really want to see resolved. It's sucked me far enough in to care a bit about it, and I had to slog through weekly installments of dullness occasionally pockmarked my rough diamonds as some of those loose ends and plot lines are advanced. Essentially 1 - What happens about the dragons? 2 - What the hell is up with Gerald and his clones/alternate bodies/somefink? 3 - Romance? Natsu x Lucy, Gray x Luvia, Gazille x Levy and Ezra x Gerald? Please? 4 - The entire 'resurrect Zeref' thing. That's it.
Now I've noticed many of the other comments compare it to One Piece. This comparison is easily made, I think, because of how the art style of Fairy Tail's mangaka is inspired by the art style of One Piece. I can't say I see many other similarities. One Piece has a fantastic, multi-layered global plot and believable, hilarious characters and executes what it tries to do extremely well. And the magic is incredibly vague, without any ground rules for how it functions, which means that he can easily pull a deus ex machina out of the bag, i.e. a new convenient power or use for magic that "magically" makes the obstacle in the plot go away. One Piece manages to get away with this by being creative in the moves that the characters use with their (more restrictive) powers. Plus I can never really identify with Mashima Hiro's main characters, there's always something about them I want to punch.
Fantastic vision but unfortunately very poorly executed. Overall, average. 5/10. If the future chapters disappoint, this will slip down lower for sure.

EDIT: Went back to it - nothing much has changed. Combat is still vague as hell. Natsu can beat these other dragon slayers. Why? Cause he's stronger that's why. -.-' Three months of training are vaguely referenced, but it's very poorly executed, like the rest of the manga. Still pretty bad.
