Description
The manga is about ten year old Chie, "the most unfortunate girl in Japan", who manages her family diner while her unemployed yakuza father and her mother are separated. This sounds really depressing, but it's actually a very funny comedy.

Chie the Brat received the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for general manga.

Never scanlated? In my country it's hugely popular and has been published and reprinted several times. Anyway, the story is about a 10-year-old girl named Chie who has to run a small diner to support herself while her dad - a slacker and her mom separate. Sounds depressing, but Chie took it for granted and continued with her life (possibly because she has grown up in that situation so for her it's perfectly normal). Just as other 10-year-old kids, Chie is innocent and lovely, then at the same time thanks to her situation she is also witty, independent , hot-tempered with a very sharp eye for money. This mix of innocence and matureness make her a very likeable character.

This is a story with no real villain. Each chapter is a day in Chie's normal life, where you can see how the characters, despite their seemingly depressing situations, live on and continue to enjoy their life. Most of the time you will just laugh because this is a very light-hearted comedy. One of my favourite quotes in this manga is "There are many ways of life". Indeed, after reading Jarinko Chie I couldnt agree more.

The only reason i can think of that make this superb work never got scanlated is because its length and its age. The art portrayed of Japan's urban areas in 80s, while its realistic, its also give off this feeling of distant, like something we see in a dream. Familiar yet at the same time not. Per modern standard, the art is crude, even more so in the first few volumes, and moe...what moe ?The characters are lovely, in the first 30 volumes i came across, you can't hate anyone, even the yakuza, this is the kind of manga you can see yakuza and police sit around a takoyaki table and laughing together (not literally but the feeling is there). The fact the biggest jerk in the whole manga also easily most loveable character also play an important part. If you want a manga that after you finish the read, you look back at your own home streets and realize how many memories you have with it, this is the one
