Description
From Yen Press:
This spin-off of the Haruhi Suzumiya series takes place in the world of the "Disappearance" arc of the original novels, focusing on the high school life (and romance) of a tentative and bashful Yuki Nagato quite unlike the one you've come to know and love through the usual exploits of the SOS Brigade. But no less charming.

Yuki, marry me!

I always secretly wished that Kyon would stay in the alternative timeline, that Yuki created in Disappearance. Whoever said that wishes don't come true can suck it. -.-

Too hasty

I can assure you that all the bad votes and comments on this one came from the readers being too hasty in judging it . The start is very slow and gives the impression of a badly done romance just for the sake of spinoff , however, the manga then develops to became (by a margain) the best haruhi spinoff , it actually has a story that is going somewhere , not to mention the romance gets better later . Recommended.

Good and Bad

Shy little Yuki, the introverted human girl hidden behind the agent of the Galactic Over-Mind in "The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi", here gets to be the heroine of her own love story. It is delightful to see such a gentle and sensitive person doing a long, slow dance of love with Kyon. That's the Good of this manga, and it gets quite good indeed in the 8th and 9th volumes, simply because YUKI IS SO LOVABLE that you can't help rooting for her.

The Bad, as I see it, is what they did with Kyon in this manga. We got to know him originally "from inside" in "The Melancholy", and that Kyon, the smart, unbelieving, cynical voice that told the story of Haruhi's wild doings, was one of the two great characters that made "Melancholy" a hit. He balanced off Suzumiya, and vice versa, and each was distinctive enough to be fascinating in his own right as well.

In this spin-off manga poor Kyon has been reduced to a cipher---an undistinctive male figure who serves only as the object of Yuki's cute yearnings and is himself not interesting in any way that I can see. Worse, this Kyon plays the classic shonen male manga character: as dense as a post about what the girl feels, no matter how many indications she lets slip about that matter.

In short, this manga is best read as an opportunity to dote on the cutest introvert girl ever to grace a manga story. The story itself, and the guy in this love plot, do not add much to that central charm of this manga.

Dissapearance of...

It seems that this is following the "Disappearance of" plot in which Yuki was a normal girl, only it seems that this Kyon isn't the same from that storyline.

I imagine this won't stay too normal for long.

romance for introverts

for once, this romance, althought very slow, but is the most real life like I've ever read, the trouble with most romance manga, is that they either have unrealistic protagonists or they have no idea about human psychology, thus assuming all people are extroverts.
I loved this one, also thank god it only share with Haruhi the characters and nothing else.

The chapter 33 convinced me. So, am I the only one who thinks this is much better than Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu ? Honestly, I couldn't keep up with SuzumiyaHaruhi, It's still there, hanging in my to-read list. I've read up to volume 4 or so and I just left it, because it wasn't all that interesting and I had better things to do. I already liked Nagato so I kind of started reading this out of curiosity. The art is awesome and the story cute, interesting, and well told. Now I'm in love with Nagato, seriously.

Well. It's actually been some time since I read The melancholy, so my opinion might have changed in the time being. But I do remember being annoyed by that manga to the point of leaving it (which is rare for me, even when I hate a series I'll always try to stick to it to the end even by reading the chapters diagonally). Anyway, this is a great manga, read it.

Hmm, has potential...

The first few chapters were so horribly translated I couldn't make any sense of the story. But now I'm kind of getting the hang of it and I'm kind of liking it. Yuki and Haruhi have completely, entirely, totally, utterly different personalities that will definitely shock people used to the original story, but they're growing on me really quickly.

The only problem now is where the author wants to take the story. So far it's been a romantic drama/high school slice-of-life manga, but a real story is going to have to emerge sooner or later...I hope. Then again I could keep going like this for a while longer.
