While the author and artist, Junji Ito, is mainly known for his horror manga, this one is a little bit less intense. While it features some of his indisputably haunting visual imagery, the plot's tone can be a bit light, even humorous at times. Character depth doesn't run far, but I still found the central protagonists to be oddly engaging, even likable, despite some of the disturbing goings-on. It's a short, easy read with plenty of pleasantly gruesome imagery.

It also features an atypically happy ending for Ito's works, though that may not be saying much. I personally found it failed to deliver on the ominous tone that permeates much of the story.
The volume also includes two short bonus stories more typical of Ito's usual style.
