There's a manga call Bra and it's easier to explain this by comparing it to it. Basically if you take out all the complications that Bra had, it's this manga. But that doesn't mean it a lesser manga. All of the bad aspects of Bra are also swept away(sweeter, not pervy, no cheating ect). Though Whether it's better depends on what you're looking for in a comic.

Nothing truely complicated happens in this comic. It makes you think if it couldn't have been resolved faster but a one shot probably wouldn't have conveyed the coming to terms feeling in this. I also didn't like the boy's attitude, it seems like he was a downer for no reason at times, just constantly complaining. He might not even be the main character since he's pushed aside a lot to cover some other plot too.

Still, this has a sweet ending, and it's fairly optimistic and nice. I don't necessarily think it says anything on the topic but like I said it is optimistic about love, at least for the two people involved, and I'm fine with that.

about the ending:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
It's the complete opposite of Bra's. In Bra, the ending made sense, and in this the ending makes sense. In Bra there was a straight kid as a love interest. In this it's a bit ambiguous(in how you want to label it) but I think the way they used the forgotten promised makes it clear that as a little boys these characters liked each other
