Kurosagi - The Black Swindler

Description

White swindlers (shirosagi) are those that cheat people to take their money, red swindlers (akasagi) are those that swindle the opposite sex, and black swindlers (kurosagi) are those that cheat the white and red swindlers. After his family is swindled by white swindlers, Kurosaki sets out to avenge them by becoming a black swindler.

Note: Won the 2008 Shogakukan Manga Award for seinen/general manga along with Bambino!.

Writing is unassuming, confident, charming

I have a strange affection for this series. It is just the most solidly good thing I've ever read, no real moment of genius or profundity or whatever, just solidly good. It's like a seinen version of Detective Conan if Detective Conan didn't go to shit.

I enjoy the characters. They're well defined and they rarely if ever grow but that's alright, because that's not the point, and plot development is not the point. Kurosagi knows what it's doing and what it doesn't even need to attempt to do, and there's such a sort of unassuming confidence about the writing (and about the main character) that is very charming in its own way. I'm glad that there is space for manga like this.

Hmm... hmm... I see some different opinions for this manga. Well, one more different opinion will bring no harm, I guess...

As for the art... very nice, all character is distinguishable, and the emotions are expressed very well. A bit dark and suitable for both adult (in general) and kid (special kid I mean).

The story... Hmm... here's the thing, this series is one of the rare manga with great research and scientific information behind the plot and story. For some people (just like me), this kind of plot and story bring a lot of information and point of view, and I really appreciate that. But for some people, the plot become less addictive and sometimes become like reading a newspaper (with some pictures) with monotone plot. Well, maybe we could use mr MatrixM advice... don't read it at once (who I much likely agree). Once more, the romance is great (you wont find this kind of relationship often)

Score: 9, for bringing Tsurara who enlighten the story much... (why u no appear much?)

Great but not marathon material

First time I read this I was around 16/17 and got tired of it before the end of the second volume. Not sure whether that's because of my age or because the story can be awfully repetitive (though there are a few refreshing ones, like the company one in vol 2). I left the series for about 2 years, and re-read up to what's released (68) over the course of a few weeks. I appreciated it a lot more this time.

So..yeah. don't read it all at once.

I really had to push myself to keep reading after a dozen chapters. I don't know, it just falls into a pattern and it isn't exciting enough to justify holding off character development for later. The main character isn't likable enough. He's got a dark past but it's revealed too early without any leaving any mystery and he's not charismatic enough to make the most of it. He's not cool enough to make his confidence seem anything other than arrogance. He's 21 but looks like an ordinary high schooler which makes him seem rather bratty. His lack of appeal makes his hunt for revenge seem petty rather than captivating.

There's nothing really wrong with the art, it's just that Kurosaki's character design is too plain and everything looks so shounen-like.

Despite the premise, I didn't find this manga dark at all yet there isn't any comedy either. It's trying too hard to please a wider audience when it would have done better to be darker and edgier.

I'm surprised at the high ratings. For me this falls flat despite its potential.

I've read it all and I have to say that, you might feel the story is not that good, but actually it can affect your life and your way of thinking a lot.

At least after done reading it, you can easily tell whenever you meet a "swindler" 🙂 .

For more, all the characters in Kurosagi have their enough space that you can notice them, more or less.

But, oh well, there're 2 things I don't like about this manga. First is Tsurara. I don't like that kind of girl, she's too self-confident, and she thinks highly about herself. Second is the ending. It's not like the ending was bad, just that it's a little half-assed. Maybe that's why there's the sequel ^"^?

Anyway, a worthy series to spend your time.

This is really tedious stuff. As the poster below said, the premise is interesting but the execution is extremely simplistic. Kurosagi is a very unsympathetic character, largely because he talks big but when faced with any real challenges he gets all scared and anxious. Basically he acts like any 16-year old would in that situation, which unfortunately makes for very bad fiction. As for his self-righteous doubtless soon to be love interest Tsurara, the less said about her the better.

But this is only 2 volumes in. For a manga like this to go on for 20 volumes I'd like to think the stories get better and more complex and the characters grow in interesting ways. The 5/10 stays until I see evidence of something better.

Edit: Reduced score to 3/10 after reading further. The quality of the "frauds" keeps getting lower and lower and Kurosaki himself keeps getting stupider and stupider. This is bad.

The concept of the manga is really interesting, but I feel that the author didn't use it to it's full potential. Instead, he just kept repeating almost the same thing... it gets boring after awhile. I would reccomend people to watch the drama of this manga instead, which is shorter and more interesting if u ask me. Still, I would reccommend this manga to people looking for something different from the usual.

Originally, I cam across this when I was looking for Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service. I was really mad at first, but was bored, so I thought I would give it a try.

Its actually pretty good! Seems a bit shounen-esc to me, but is lighthearted(In my opinion.. anyway...) and fun. Overall, a good read.
