This was not fluff at all and like NEXTLOVER suggested, it's probably not for someone who can't comprehend a depth of emotion yet in their lives. If you want everyone to run off into the sunset, happy and holding hands, then this isn't for you. That said, it's not excessively depressing and doesn't throw in traumatic things for the sake of being dramatic.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Sonoda is young and still figuring out life and love, so the fact that he didn't end up with Haruji in the end isn't really so terrible. It's not realistic for people to meet "the one" at 17 and find eternal happiness, so I prefer that it panned out the way it did.

Good stuff. I approve. The art is also not bad, when I thought it would be.

It has SOUL

The mangaka has a way of writing her stories with soul. This was soulful, deep, thought-provoking, but still understandable without it being pretentious. This one is most DEFINITELY not for the young'uns. It would hurt their brains too much if they tried to understand it. Likewise for those who don't have any concentration at all.

Reading this story made me a bit depressed because I really wanted the best for Maki, especially since he tried so hard to stay strong and do his best for the people he cared about, even at the expense of his own feelings.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
I guess I just really wanted Maki and Haruji to stay together, because the story about Mizuguchi and Haruji seemed too much like a thing of the past to convince me that they should get back together. Meanwhile, Maki was trying his best to comfort Haruji and really loved him, so I felt that Haruji should have pick him instead...

The story about Maki and Reni seemed a bit sudden, because there was no explanation about how they met, but reading about them in Fake Fur made me want to learn more about them...I would have really liked it if there was more of a story on Maki after Kanjou Kairo.
