From Baka-Tsuki:

In the near future, a Japanese scientist engineers a powered exoskeleton called "Infinite Stratos" (IS). Possessing technology and combat capabilities far more advanced than any other weapon system, the IS threatens to destabilize the world. Faced with such an overpowering weapon, the nations of the world enact the "Alaska Treaty", which states that IS will never be used for military combat and that existing IS technology must be equally distributed to all nations, to prevent any one nation for dominating the others.

The introduction of the IS does however have a major effect on society. As IS can only be operated by women, the power balance between men and women is broken, with women coming to dominate society over men.

Ten years after the first IS were introduced, the world has entered a new age of peace. The peace is shattered, however, by an unexpected discovery. A 15 year old Japanese boy, named Ichika Orimura, is discovered to be capable of operating an IS. Realizing the potential, Ichika is forced by the Japanese government to attend the prestigious Infinite Stratos Academy, an international academy where IS pilots from all over the world are trained. Thus his busy school life surrounded by girls begins.

A ridiculous, seemingly useless, harem; plot's becoming redundent? Just add more! ... Girls, that is. There are very few males with names, to solidly identify them with, in this LN. 'Verbal and physical Ichika bashing' around every other half-dozen pages, which is not exaggerrating(those books are not meant to hit heads; which is said to be protective and caring of Ichika from the other characters, being 'looked after' by his sister, which it is not). Example: "Ichika made me react this way!", *hits*, with and/or "compensate me with something, it's your fault that you made me react this way." and a possible a psuedo-'date' would be *agreed upon*, buy them a (sweet?) snack or other, for whichever ham-fist(often more than one), Etc. And... all 'enemies' are girls, too. Welcome to (a crypto-)Feminazi world!

Very little, that which is there is predictable. The mechanics of the story aren't defined, yet, explaned as-is. Functions and dynamics of whomever's suit are *said* in the story - farthest it's explained how it happens(materializes, also) is; there's these parts with ____ function and [>]so-and-so's sister is a genius[<repeat ad nauseam]!
Some ___, and ____ happens after, sometimes during, every competition(usually for status, in vainity, for Ichika), and tournament(up to volume 7, and I don't remember seeing one being completed yet), respectively.

Parents; What are those?
Child with Wallet, aka, Ichika(money passed over as-is, too, except it was written at least once that it is mostly from his sister), doesn't have much going for him, if stubbornness isn't counted - unless, 'afterall he should protect friends'-stereotype(my definition of friend is nowhere near as tolerant with their behavior) is redeemable. Female Lead is a huge(author made 'em huge, too*) tsundere with a tint of narcissism('gasp, so he's really, finally, thinking of me in that way' thing, and then the let-down, 'stupid Ichika!'). All the side characters seem like they are there to make the story shake but not move. Except possibly 'Charles' in the beginning, whom he seemed to connect with but he posited it as 'she's the understanding type!' almost downplaying her role; eventually she is acting similarily as the other girls, but she has pebbles, not rocks.
[*Like most LN in this genre, asthetics become more important than personality. Self-reflection of their actions is near zero. Though, the author adds in those sudden maiden-esqe thoughts with 'indecent' situations - and Child with Wallet's inability to let himself even defend verbally and possibly physically(rebut) when their actions pull the (vocal)cords they attached to his wallet, contradicts his stubbornness. Letting them continue such actions without a stern comment to explain himself and ask them logical questions, enables further occurences. The selfish habit the girls form of acting in such puerile manners could be stopped, if one sees them as bad, corrupt, and therefore helping his friends in stopping.]

Overall: 1
As a side note, Baka-Tsuki's refined translation for the first volume is much better than the first translation. But then, in the other volumes it goes about half-way between volume one's rough and refined translations. If the author had really written it that way, then my rating would be 2 to 2.5.

Same shounen sterotypes abound. I would reccomend reading something else.
