I did not expect this. Repeat: I DID NOT EXPECT THIS.

Where do I begin? How do I begin?

Muryu has done it again. How I Found It In July has already made it into my All Time Favs list, and now so has this one. I might even like this better.

It took me a while to like the characters (especially Dan Ah lol), but one by one they all slowly grew on me. Their struggles, their pain, and most of all, the longing between the three main characters. Damn. The author so perfectly captures their unending desperation for love.

Sometimes I was so annoyed at one particular character for giving their heart completely to another person despite how badly they were treated. But as the story progressed, I gradually started to understand them. I've met so many people irl who were just like these main characters. People who love with their whole heart, who love unselfishly, and who would sacrifice everything if it means they get to be by their lover's side.

When I read stories, I often get so frustrated at the characters for doing dumb shit just because of "love". I'd roll my eyes and wonder whyyy couldn't they use their brain for once and stop thinking about love.

But with this story.. I still got annoyed sometimes ngl, but I still really liked the main characters because of how realistically imperfect they are. These characters have depths, they feel just as deeply as any other humans do. And that's exactly what I loved about this story. The author takes time to dive deep into the characters' hearts and thoughts and I applaud her for that.

As for the political aspects of this story and all the plot twists, I believe another round of applause is required for the author. Some of the plot twists left me staring at my bedroom wall for like five minutes. It was amazing but heartbreaking at the same time, all things considered.

And let's not forget the art!! Stunning, gorgeous, beautiful. One of the best, really (I expected nothing less from Muryu tbh).

***

Phew. I've just finished reading this manhwa and my heart is still in shambles. This story is of course not without its mistakes, but it really is damn near perfect. I'd absolutely recommend this to anyone. Who knows? It might be your next favorite.

Ending Explanation
by SearchesAlot

Rating: 9.0  / 10.0
This is only for those who are still confused or upset about the ending and some hints from Muryu indicating that the ending is not as sad as it seems. Only read if you finished the manhwa or else the hints and such would not make sense. This will also explain a bit about Dan Ah's position in this love triangle as many are still confused about that as well.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Dan Ah loving Hwi is a subtle thing. She blushes and warms up when looking at Hwi’s paintings. She states that she realizes Nabi holds an important and big part of her heart when they arrived at the palace. She realizes that Nabi is a man and is the Crimson Moon but chooses to help him still. She never once revealed Nabi’s identity. When she realizes the meaning of Nabi’s wish, she lets out a pained cry. This all indicates that while she is in love with Won, she may not realize that Hwi has slowly crawl into her heart. Although she stated that even if Won was not the boy, her first love, she has already love Won. This is true, but when she realizes that Hwi was her first love, she also regrets not noticing his feelings for her this whole time. Now everything makes sense for her and she needed to stop the brothers from killing each other. Realizing that Hwi was the boy she was searching for this whole time and falling slowly for Hwi without realizing that shows that even if Hwi was not the boy, she would still fall for Hwi. It is just that she fell in love with Won first that she could not accept or did not realize her feelings for Hwi. However, when hints show up that Hwi was her first love, she wanted to know why Hwi is acting like the kind boy she knew. It shows that she might have wanted some justification for why she is feeling this way for Hwi. We see later on that the only memory she has is one of Lord Won Lee. This may be because she did in fact fall for Won and his death had a huge impact on her. Hwi doesn’t correct her, showing that he too could not forget Won. However, the ending is also hopeful because once Dan Ah recovers all her memories, she can love Hwi for himself. This also fulfils Hwi’s only wish: To walk under the sun as himself with Danah along his side. We also see in the writer’s afterword, which you can view in Daum that there is a possibility of Won being alive and of Hwi meeting Juk again and the truth revealed. The first possibility is indicated by the carriages leaving GaGook. We see that one of them has Rei and her nephew in it. However, there are two carriages with the rest being luggage wagons. It is possible that Won will live with his wife and daughter in SeoSeo, though losing his identity as the former Emperor. Jang, the nephew, loves Rei a lot, so something like this is not surprising. The suggestion that the twins may meet up again is also possible because Hwi is in GaGook and in the BiHwa forrest where Dan Ah stated that only royalty is allowed (though so many “commoners” can still show up there. Is this place even guarded at all? lol). While it might not be possible for all three brothers to meet, I am satisfied with this ending and the hints that Muryu has given us throughout the manhwa.

Overall, this is a great read and the plot twists are unexpected and well planned. Muryu does plant some hints and foreshadowing here and there. So you might get a different feel reading this manhwa a second time. I highly recommend it.

The story and the ending SPOILERS

The story is intricate, delicious, shocking, amazing... it unfolds, it brings you both pain and thirst to know more, right until the very end... At that point everything just finishes exactly how it started, dramatic and painful. No one gets what they deserve, being happiness or closure, Danah keeps being useless and annoying until the very end.... Disrespectful, awful, and rushed ending.

Cruel Ending ~SPOILERS~

I painfully collected keys on Spottoon so you didn't have to. OKAY, SO:

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
What a cruel fate for all of them. The love triangles and misunderstandings are driving me nuts.
Can you imagine how King Lee Won would feel when he finds out the one he falls in love with is actually....

DUN DUN DUN HIS BROTHER UNDER DISGUISE AS A WOMAN (Nabi aka Lee Hwi) so he could collect information to overthrow him and take his country back.

Lee Hwi is in love with Dan Ah who thinks her childhood friend is the king (and so she blindly falls in love with him) when in reality it was Lee Hwi, but he can't reveal anything because he has people relying on him to reclaim his country.

Okay..but the REAL SPOILER IS HERE, hold on to your seats...you're gonna be sh*tting bricks.

Both Lee Hwi and his best friend, Lee Juk, the guy with the one eye are TWIN BROTHERS. IT MAKES ALL THREE OF THEM BROTHERS.

It was taboo to have twins because THEIR father had a twin brother. The twin princes divided the country and it turned into a blood bath resulting in his brother's death. So to avoid the same mistake, their father chose the stronger twin (Juk).

After the news of their delivery, the king refused to send a doctor, hoping the younger one would die. Moments after delivery, Minister Ha Lee came in the nick of time to whisk Hwi away after being begged by the queen (who is his wife's cousin). As he was smuggling the child away, Doctor Ma bumped into Minster Ha Lee. Seeing how the baby wouldn't make it through the night, he nursed him back to health and returned Hwi back to Minster Ha Lee.

7 years later, with the Kings declining health, he told the queen that she can bring "that child" back to the palace...But an even bigger shocker is that the King knew all along that Hwi was with Minister Ha Lee. The only condition was that no one was to know Hwi is a Prince until after Juk is King. So then the Queen told Minister Ha Lee it was time to bring Hwi to the palace.

For the first time, Hwi was able to leave his house IN 7 YEARS. He was introduced the Crown Prince Juk at the age of 7 to be his bodyguard and they became inseparable. On the day of his arrival, his mother met him for the first time, but was not able to call him son (T_T). [

Blah blah blah, the rebellion happened, the royal family died, the evil b*tch concubine became Queen mother, and Lee Won became King.

Now in order for Crown Prince Juk to take back the thrown in 10 years time, he must stay alive first. Him and his trusted advisors said he should have a double. Hwi volunteered to pretend to be the Crown Prince[/spoiler] And that's how the story started.

Only the king, queen, Hwi's adopted parents, doctor Ma and the teacher knew the true identity of Hwi (but they all died during the first rebellion except the teacher and doctor).

In the end, the teacher couldn't bring himself to tell the now King Lee Juk, that Lee Hwi is his twin ...... Dan Ah lost her memory, and keeps on calling Lee Hwi, Lee Won (the red haired king).

And the manhwa ended with both remaining brothers not knowing the truth.....

So heartbreaking.

Secrets upon secrets...inception of secrets.

Overstayed its welcome

Twelve nights is possibly one of the most disappointing manhwas I've ever read. It isn't because it was bad, but more like because it "became bad". The starting chapters were amazing, doing a great job in introducing interesting characters, plot points and social interactions. Plus, the art! Oh the art! Praise the author for such a gorgeous rendition of an intriguing story.

Then, it kinda starts to drag a little bit. I didn't mind it at all. But...the dragging went on and on and on and on and ON AND ON AND ON AND ON! Holy crap! When is this going to end?! Not the manhwa, but a certain story arc as well as a complete (moronic-by-now) misunderstanding.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Especially the part when Nabi (I'm just gonna call him that) is supposed to kill the emperor. Why is he NOT doing it for pete's sake?! There was no solid backdrop for such strong feelings to hold him back. I do get that he might be wavering due to their 'friendship' or the fact that the female protag was in love with red-hot-chili-pepper-head. Still, is it a logical thing to draw even more freaking attention to yourself just cause you can't do one single job? He was supposed to be the face of a rebellion! See how things get more fucking complicated because of your stupidity? There was nothing to lose! Everyone hates the emperor anyway. I'm sure many of the higher ups would be happy to see him dead in a ditch. Why are you so STUPID?!

Why are you still dressing up a woman when there's no freaking reason to? Also, the romance, I realized, is absolutely absurd. It was understandable at first, but then....yeah, eww.

Sorry, got carried away.

Twisted destiny (Warning: contains spoiled)

"That's destiny!!!" I can only say that when reading this manhwa. All of them both love the one that they shoudn't love. This makes the love triangle turn into a more complicated relationship than any kind of relationship I've read before biggrin I really feel sorry for Dan Ah. She loves Yi Won too much though what she did irritates me sometimes^ ^ Poor Yi Won too. I can feel his desperate love to Nabi ( aka Yi Hwi). Yi Hwi gets stuck in his love to Dan Ah but he can't express. OMG a real triangle-shaped love!!!! biggrin

Besides, the beautiful artwork captures my eyes. After Noblesse, this is the second webcomic I've read so far and I feel really satisfied. Highly recommend!!!!!

A wonder

This is quite the surprise as it come to a "classic" full-color manhwa as we know them.

Since most of them aren't the best as it comes to details and quality character desings, I must say that alongside THe Magician, Twelve Nights is probably the most beautiful manwha ever.

I mean, look a these drawings ! Such detail, such beauty, so poetic that leave me open-mouthed.

However there is one smal shortcoming, but maybe it's because it is only the beginning : I am having hard time to understand the storyline here. What happened to the crown prince and his guardian ? Who is this groupe that left the red-haired emperor alone at the festival (don't ask for name, I still can't stand korean names lol).

Many mysteries I hope will be solved in the upcoming chapters.

And as always, many thanks to EG Scans. Excellent work, truly. They managed to stick to spirit of this remakable manhwa, truly appreciated.
