Description

Invading the World All Alone is the missing link between Hoshi no Samidare and Spirit Circle

Hitoribocchi no Chikyuu Shinryaku (Invading the world all lone) is the closest you'll find of a new manga by Satoshi Mizukami.It starts with a similar premise "boy meets a girl who wants world domination" of hoshi no samidare, but even with this similar idea at the beginning it keeps evolving into it's own thing on a much bigger scale closer to spirit circle's. Maiko Ogawa's unique blend of slice of life, romance and sci-fi battle shonen is very distinct, the world and characters bleeds with melancholy.
The story have this samidare-esque style for 3 volumes, then on volume 4 there's a revelation that obviates to the reader what the manga really is: the tragedy of a girl who is searching to belong and be loved. This volume 4 brilliantly uses intertextuality with one of the most famous books of the 20th century (I won't spoil what book it is).

Comparisons with Satoshi Mizukami are inevitable, but it's not derivative at all. Invading the world all alone has it's own identity, this manga is so specific that you can almost descontruct in how much mizukami it is, how much of classic shonen sunday Mitsuru Adachi the art style take inspiration from, to even how much of Ghibli is in the story; The way that magic and supernatural elements work have an abstract ludic style, almost functioning on dream logic similar to how magic works in Howl's Moving Castle. The latter half of the manga is much weirder than the first half, Maiko Ogawa has an incredible skill in making slice of life and romance moments co-exist seamlessly with an epic battle shonen of cosmic scale; I don't know how she does it.

Can't follow the battles

I like the peaceful parts of this manga, but when the battles ramp up after chapter 40, I find the adversaries too abstractly drawn to follow the fights. Ditto their weapons. As a mixture of a nice slice of life manga and a battle mange, this doesn't work well for me, maybe because I almost never like battle manga.

This is really cute. Not your typical shounen action/romance either. So the concept is basically op girl meets useless boy. They have a complex past that eventually gets revealed. What really makes this manga for me is the MC. He's not headstrong or has unreasonable goals. Nor is he the wimp turn hero with enough pushing. There is a sense of peace in this, the manga feels sort of passive in a way. Pacing is slow... in a good way.

Until we find nagi to be controlled by a bad guy, and all hell breaks loose.

The current new arc - starting chapter 59 - however kinda speeds up the pacing - not in a good way imo. Fast balls are being thrown left and right which kinda give me the idea the series is wrapping up in a not so good way.

Otherwise the manga is cute, both story and art, the dynamics between characters is great

Brothers and Nozomi with her sister and the action scenes aren't terrible if a bit... less action oriented?

Wow, i'm surprised nobody has commented this manga yet !
Because i love it x)
More particularly, i love the "spirit" of this one, the peaceful atmosphere that calms people
...maybe i'm feeling the same thing as when i finished a long novel, some times ago. this is a sentiment of completion, that warms the heart 😀
I'm sure the calm atmosphere comes from the art, not a complicated one, but a good one, i like the way characters are drawn very much !

Oh and the plot is quite a pleasure too, i think it may be a shounen cliché of the older girl taking he lead, and the young boy, but it's not a pain in the eye like when i see sometimes the almost magical op boy (Bullet armor is the last manga i remember with that, i'm sorry i've just read the first volume, so i can't say if it's really true, but i forgot the name of the right example i would likr to give) or the story of superexcited young people (like high school dxd, bwah, a harem, or of baka to test, his one wasnt bad, it made me laugh, but i dont have any attachment to it)

Aaaaw, now i feel like a very old grandfather after saying that x')
So the reason i like his one more is because it targets a more (not mature, no need to be proud) ready audience to meditation, reflexion on life. And i can easily forget the power of the MC when this is his fragile part that is showed.

So just read it and enjoy !
