Description
Hayate Ayasaki, 16, world's fastest delivery boy. Currently working because his parents are unemployed. After his Boss finds out that he's under the minimum age requirements, he gets fired... and his paycheck goes to his parents. To his dismay, they spent it all in the casinos, and racked up an incredible debt, which then leads to him being chased by the Yakuza, because his parents sold his organs to them. Not knowing what to do, he comes up with a plan to pay off the debt - a plan that involved kidnapping a young girl all alone in the park. After a series of events, he ends up being this girl's butler. This is the story of a butler's love, sweat and blood!

Possibly coming to a conclusion? by drunkguy on October 19th, 2009, 1:24pm

It's not often that I find a character that I repeatedly feel sorry for but Hayate is probably the best human. (Menchi from Excel Saga being the best period.) The story is messed up and the art is a bit plain but you'd be hard pressed to find a better gag manga in serialization. Now if only this series didn't have a huge hole of untranslated chapters.

edit: The story has taken on a more serious tone in the later chapters and arcs tends to be drawn out across several chapters. This is usually a sign that the story will come to an end soon which is unfortunate. Serious endings to silly stories always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Then again, knowing how many story arcs can still flow from this series, it may very well last for another two hundred and fifty chapters.

I love Hayate no Gotoku! by thischinksays on July 28th, 2009, 12:05am

When I first started reading Hayate, I was completely in the mood for just this type of story. All at once, I fell in love. The manga caught my heart through the hilariously improbable situations and crazy settings. Hayate is an unlucky jack of all trades. This manga is such a fun and light read, when I got to the end of the scanlations, I was genuinely disappointed that there wasn't more to read. All the characters are silly and lovable all at once. Hinagiku is my favorite character, she is just too cute. I can only hope that Hayate no Gotoku will continue forever and that the scanlaters catch up to the releases.

Something to enjoy. by Crenshinibon on January 9th, 2009, 5:40am

Hayate is something akin to my guilty pleasure in the manga world. Despite its utter absurdity, I often find myself laughing out loud and enjoying many of the characters. The writer just seems to have the sort of inherent talent that makes that sort of thing possible.

Honestly, there's not a ton to say here. The deadpan comedy is good, the parodies are clever, and you can even occasionally care about the characters in a series that, were it written by anyone else, would be utterly flat and boring.

So good that I created a translation group for it. by woxxy on August 18th, 2008, 5:15pm

I love this series because of the characters. Hayate is just unique: totally unlucky, able with his good boy behaving to catch the heart of most of the girls around him, and with a quite misterious past. And a peculiar characteristic of being just invincible.
Nagi with her unrequited love gives the base of the comedy. Her being totally different from Hayate will just make the two misunderstand anything between themselves, and they will never understand their feelings for eachother.
Then I could go on for Maria and Hinagiku... but I have a blog for that.

The comedy is well done even if quite forced. Forced isn't bad as long as the jokes stand the moment. In fact, there's comedy just when possible, and the atmosphere let's it happen.
Contradicting the comedy, there are quite a few arcs that are quite serious and intense.

Funny by Kratos330 on June 1st, 2008, 6:38pm

Its funny how so many other series are parodied, I knew like over half of them. This series is hilarious though i hope they got into the relationship within the characters more then pure comedy its getting pretty tiring =\

Hayate The Combat Butler by SBX on May 16th, 2008, 6:49am

I'll admit it - I was originally drawn in by the title. "Combat Butler"? Are you kidding me? There's no way anything called "Combat Butler" can be anything but good. It's up there with "Ninja Librarian" in terms of eye-catching titles.

But this series is growing better and better the more I read of it, bizarre loli fanservice excluded. When Hayate get made fun of by Santa in the very first chapter, you know you're in for a treat, and this manga does not disappoint. Over the course of reading it, my grade for the series has gone from an 8.5 to an 8.7 to a 9 to a 9.3. With Inuyasha nearing its conclusion (God willing), Hayate the Combat Butler will soon be my highest-rated ongoing series.

Don't let the plethora of prepubescent girls scare you off this comic or make you think it's a childish series. It's really quite funny and fit for all ages.

The Soul of...Hayate the Combat Butler by jjrangiawha on January 3rd, 2008, 6:19am

(Oh, I've only read two and a half volumes so far so this doesn't have any spoilers)

The feel of this manga is a little different from any manga I have ever read.

Kinda reminds me of Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and The Sea.

Where a tragic character battles to the end against an invincible enemy (geez, I'm talking about life if you didn't already realise it.)

Still very funny though.

Maybe some won't be able to see the 'Soul' beyond the cheap lolicon fan service but it's there if anyone really wants to look beyond that to see the story of man that will battle life to the very end with all his might.

I've also picked up the scent of allegory for the either the rich in general or the Japanese rich (the multi-billionaires). Not quite certain about which so far.

Maybe Hata Sama just got dumped by a rich girl and this series is his way of getting a little payback...

Sorry, Hata Sama, I was only joking, what are going to do with that machine gun?.

Hata Sama!...

Otaku's sense of humour by Bakuhatsu on January 1st, 2008, 10:07pm

I find this series hilarious. That's all it is, but comedy is a great read...who needs storylines when you just need a little laugh? Believe it or not, I found this series to have development and a plot. The growing relationship between a butler and a manga obsessed master surrounded by "idiots". I can smell the parodies within this manga. It's jokes are for those who are strongly tied in with ALOT of manga. (due to it's trillions of classic manga parodies + jokes, and the foriegn Otaku "language" the master speaks in sometimes) I like it's over exaggeration with "poor and helpless" and the "Rich as hell" kind of thing. I also love it's jokes with the extremes and the "dry" reality jokes that can really burst your gut. (for the otaku mind anyway). I believe this series is reccomended for "otakus" who want a good laugh. (By otaku I mean, you reading all and remembering moments from series like voltron or the whole gundam series or fist of the north star) Artwork is okay...at times, it's nice, at times it's lacking.
Re-reading this series is nice too...it's a "don't get too bored with it" thing.
