I am baffled by the popularity of this manga. Yes, the art is nice. Yes, we all love a castle setting and a royal romance. But it's no good having those things if you're just going to attach them to a boring plot and extremely dull characters!

I was actually quite surprised. I've tried reading this manga about three times over the years and dropped it at different stages each time. But I watched the anime and quite liked it. I think the main problem for me is the male lead. He's just too much of a smiley 'nice boy.' I kept wanting to pair the female lead with other more interesting characters.

I don't think the drama is all that exciting either. Stuff happens, but in a boring 'oh is that all' kind of way. The mangaka clearly wants the female lead to come across as strong and independent, but then the male lead just keeps coming across as a bit wishy-washy and lame.

I'd say the anime is worth a watch if you're bored. But I don't think I can recommend the manga - it just doesn't quite make the grade plot and character wise. It's a shame really, I think it had the potential to be really great.

How did this get so popular?

Don't get me wrong -- I'm glad shoujo as a demographic is getting more exposure and more respect. It certainly deserves it.

But, like, why this one?

I read and dropped this manga maybe two years ago. Suddenly, it gets an anime, and I'm seeing it everywhere. It's crazy! There are so many amazing shoujo titles out there -- why is this lukewarm one getting so much attention?

This is a manga I really wanted to like. I love fairytales, especially subverted and twisted ones. This seemed right up my alley. But, as it turns out, the premise is far more interesting than the execution. I think the author really dropped the ball on this one. It could have been excellent, but instead, it meanders around in mediocrity.

My biggest qualm is that it's boring. Despite the charming and sparkly artwork, the dull plot and characters made this a chore to get through. And that's the manga's biggest downfall: Its flat characters. I find it hard to criticize them because there's nothing particularly wrong with them. They're just... boring. Dull. Devoid of life. Here's another word that I think describes this manga: Safe. The author plays everything very safe, from safe artwork to safe characters in a safe plot. Nothing pushes any boundaries. Nobody acts outside their archetype. And the characters are archetypes. They can be found in any historical fantasy series. There's nothing in Akagami that we haven't seen done before, and done far, far better. I feel like the author was too afraid to really push these characters -- kind of like a mom who's content to let her children get Cs in school just so long as they're passing. She's afraid to push them to aim higher because there's a possibility that they'll crash and burn, so she's playing it safe. But I would rather see these characters crash and burn than stagnate. At least then, you know the author is trying to push them out of their comfort zones. But this author takes no risks, and there are therefore no rewards. Everything is very bland and palatable.

Like I said, I really wanted to like this manga. But the mediocrity wore on me, and I have little patience for regurgitated archetypes. Give me more flare, more passion! I dropped this one about eight or so chapters in, so perhaps it does get better, but from what I've seen so far, it's just not worth wading through all that tedium just to get to the light that may or may not be at the end of the tunnel. I'd rather spend my time poking around for another, better shoujo.

5/10 because it's... average.

Akagami no Shirayukihime is a nice manga, has a good setting, good chars, good relations and I like the art. It has all that but it lacks development so far, it lacks a sense of having the story moving forward, yeah, I know where it's steering to but I so far it's just building it's base for the most part, so I can't really rate it as high as I would till this moves a little forward with the plot. Can see others have similar ideas on this. I'm still hopeful thou.

Yet another manga I loved at the beginning. I followed this basically since it was first released, but it's started lagging. I sincerely hate it when mangakas do that. This should have ended long before or the mangaka should have found new direction and pushed forward with developing characters and plot more. It really kills the series for me when they start dragging it out. I understand why they do it (popularity, etc) because it's good for business, but it's so detrimental to the story.

That's my problem with this manga. I read manga mostly because of escapism, but there's not much character development and the story lacked an overarching story line. It's a huge shame, since I thought that Akagami no Shirayukihime had tons of potential.

The manga itself isn't bad at all though. Characters are fairly realistic and likeable. You don't see a lot of the overused shoujo manga cliches. The art is nothing spectacular but well above average. It's more of a slice of life set in a fantasy world, and that made sense. Still, it wasn't my cup of tea. As I said, without a Real Plot it just didn't look as appealing to me.

Recommended Audience (IMO) - Those who like slice of life, a light story and a sweet, not-so-cliche romance. Or those who wanted to kill time xD

I think this is a great, easy going series that is happily devoid of any cliches. It honestly feels like a Slice of Life genre with an almost fantasy-esque historical setting, and from reading some of the negative reviews it seems they dislike it for its Slice of Life style, as opposed to disliking the series itself.

This series is one of my favorites! Definatly in my top 5! I know a lot of people say it has a slow begining but I had no trouble picking this manga up I read the first 9 volumes in about 3 days. I am just waiting for more to release in the US or for someone to udate online. I highly recomend this series for anyone who wants to read a good romance fantasy manga.

I liked it more when I thought it was a one shot. The are is wonderful and the story is just I'm not sure where its going. I feel that is just been dragged on when it should have already ended.

STILL I do enjoy reading it to kill time.

I've tried reading this manga so many times. The first time I tried which was maybe 2 years ago, I couldn't get past the first few chapters. After reading reviews, I decided to give it a go again. I got past the slow beginning, and I did get into it a bit after, but stopped in the middle of volume five and can't seem to pick it up again no matter how many times I try.

The characters are nice, art is nice, story is nice too, but I find everything to be "flat". I like the characters but they lack a special zap that makes them stand out. I might update this review seeing if I ever am able to read further..
