I'm only 4 chapters in but I really can't see the draw.. it seems very random and the story jumps around a bit. It really shouldn't take more than 4 chapters to set up a basic plot other than episodic trials against bad guys.. unless that's all there is to this. In which case a 4 would be well deserved.

Very Interesting

I had to sign in just to comment this manhwa, 'cause all the critics I've seen are "there's no personal development", "Berserk is much better", "clichée ending" blah blah blah.
First of all, this is a manhwa, if you want to read a typical manga, don't read this. It's based losely on korean culture, don't expect it to be the usual "the strongest/most determinated wins all, some kind of miraculous twist happens because I'm such a badass" story, pllllease, go read shounen manga if you want that...
And the comparison to Berserk! For god's sake! There is nooo comparison! The only similarity is the demon like enemy, that's all... There aren't naked women or rape at EACH CHAPTER like there are in Berserk (don't get me wrong... Berserk is good in it's own way, but after six/seven volumes or so you're already expecting a rape in the next five pages...), and he isn't fucking damn invincible, he uses his BRAIN, and there aren't gratuitous violence and miraculous comebacks all the time.
Anyway, this is a story about MUNSU, not about Sando, Bang Ja or whatever. Sando, for ex., is a inocent, weak minded country girl... to me, her ending were fitting, giving the amount of chapters; Bang Ja were just comic relief, the author said so himself. The only one I really felt sorry for was Won Sul, it was just tragic.
There's a lot of flashbacks, and it takes a while to understand. There are a lot of enemies changing sides, but you kind of get it, they were "monster like" soldiers who lived to battle/be ordered around; AND they were completely helpless against Aji Tae. So, give me a break, what were they supposed to do? Say "I'll kill you!" and have their head exploded in the next five seconds?
Finally, Munsu is a hella nice antihero, don't expect him to be a nice guy like "i'm invencible", "the world is great, just keep on believing!". He's a realistic guy, he just loses it when it's about Aji Tae (with reason).
So, I'm giving it a 8, 'cause the art, the story, the strong kickass women and the main character kept me interested 'till the end. The only flaws to me are some random dialogues used to make you feel one way now so that in ten chapters ahead you totally change your view. It's a trick used a little too many times in this manhwa.
Overall, I liked it a lot, I couldn't stop reading until the end. It's refreshing, and it didn't make me roll my eyes like most of shounen/seinen series does oh so many times to me nowadays (and stop comparing everything to Berserk! It gets annoying after a while!).

I LOVED this manwha

But not everyone will, as shown by this vitriolic fellow RexIX below me.

What he says doesn't completely lack merit. The manwha is very psychological (not horror psychological, its just a lot of things have more to do with the mind rather than some kind of crazy celestial power or something), and a lot of what goes on is deliberately left unexplained for a while, but if you bear with it, it becomes clear. A lot of things are heavily influenced by people believing things and force of will, not like pure power, like in Bleach for example. If anything, this manhwa is NOT straight forward.

I, personally, understood the characters choices rather easily once events became clear, but that's just me. If you think the ending is cliched, there's no help for you, in fact I really don't understand how you could possibly think the ending was cliched at all. In fact, its probably the least cliched ending that I could think of (thats good anyway)...

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The only part you could really think that was cliched was the Sando thing, but she cut his damn arm off, and in addition Munsu was facing down Aji Tae and shown completely powerless as his body parts literally exploded, Munsu had already been shown to be a weakass when facing down the dude with the hugeass sword. There was no "rawr, Im going to win because I have resolve" thing going on, no insane boost of strength, the Aji Tae's power is vested in his nearly inerrant self-confidence and his near-omniscience. He had problems with Munsu because Munsu had previously literally given him an ass kicking, and when Munsu faced him down without even displaying a slight lack of confidence it shook him up. Oh, and Munsu died, and was fully aware he was going to die very soon before the final battle, and Sando just disappeared to wherever afterwards as well.

*deep breath*
*exhales*

If you're the kind of person who likes a Fairy Tail like "friends" thing going on where everything turns out great, this manwha is not for you. If you don't mind a little convolutedness, then go for it. I loved it.

Waay overrated

Well, just before I say anything else - the hype didn't live up to itself.

The art is great in this manga, but that's about it.

The characters do not leave a feeling of depth, their actions are more likely to leave you with an impression that the character behavior is defined by authors whim and not by the character’s way of thinking. Seen at its best in the Hwelbindang arc
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
when the leader Hong Gildong announces that the city besieged, when taken, shall be burned to the ground, but then few chapters latter in the flashbacks we see a kind hearted Hong Gildong who is shocked that a person is killed without her orders. Seems that there is just a small step from a good natured thief to a genocidal maniac.
And this is not the only example were storytelling seems to go in heavy contradictions to already or later established facts. Ondal and Pyeonggang arc would be just another fine example where as it seems parts of the arc are being being shown happenening
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
while in reality they have not even happened in the imagination of the schizophreniac princess.

It feels that the author of the manga portrayed these events in the particular way not to tell a story of a princess teared apart in her cage but to fool the reader with artificial drama or make the reader feel in a certain way about events that have already been established by sawing together events don't do not stick together or feel obviously out of place.

Ok so the story telling and characters are contradictory, but what about their development it is an epos right? As it has been noted before the character development doesn't deserve any mention... AT ALL. I feel sorry for having to even write this. We have main heroes like Sando and Bang Ja who come into the story fairly blank and walk out blank again. According to a number of reviewers this is an epic story. In an epic story a character shouldn't be a blank page when it leaves the story, but they do. The a/m (Sando and Bang Ja) main characters have bleak (if any) back stories, they rarely get any show time and their actions are episodic, but in the end
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
when the main hero pleads to Sando come to her senses
we are supposed to feel for their relationship and understand how deep their bond is. But there is just one problem, through the whole story they have at most had a paragraph of conversations, Sando is always keeping a distance thus it is not clear when the supposed bond was born between Sando and Munsu.

And again this is just an example. There are other characters with as pathetic character development. Like all the underlings of Munsu that fought with him with the monsters in the great battle while he was ageneral. Their characters experience a complete 180 degree turn at least more then two times in the whole story, and for the first switch (when they joined Aji Tae) there is completely no explanation, then for the second one it is so bleak that I think the author should have left it out completely
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
they get beaten and die.
Everything what these former comrades say contradicts to what they did before joining Aji Tae, and it can’t even be explained by their fear from Aji Tae, as in the end they still switch sides without any logical reason.

The ending of course is clichéd and IMO no spoilers could ever spoil you the story considering that it is completely like any other story of this type.
If you are looking for an epic story about war with deep characters better take Threads of Time or Berserk this story's characters are mediocre at best.

Initially I did wish to give this manga a 6, as I considered it to be a mediocre piece but ok to read, but as I hate the hype about this manga, I gave it 1 simply because I do not think it deserves such high rating and a 6 wouldn’t bring the stats down.

I read this when my reading list was only 50 series long. 300 series later, I still thought it was the very best (as in the best out of all that I have read). If anything, make time for this piece. No, just drop everything else to start this one if you have no time. Its GODLIKE

To be honest, I don´t really get why this Manhwa has such a high ratings. Sure, it had a decent plot and nice characters, but I just couldn´t get myself to like it wholeheartedly. Why? well, I will try to explain that as much as I can.

Basically, I considerd this to be a lighter version of the manga Berserk, but unlike Berserk it became boring after 10-20 chapters or so. Don´t get me wrong, this Manhwa was good, but lacking in many areas. For example, some of the characters was not developt enough and they could easily fade away from the memory. Sando was one of them, she was one of the main characters but I could still not really remember her after she joined the Aji tae team. I didn´t feel like it was something missing, and that proves that Sando was not fully developt.

Now to the Spoilers:

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
*Sigh*....Munsu. I really liked him, I really did. Until the authors decided to put a woman in his life and make him a love-struck man. Sacrifice your health and take over her sickness....I mean...Really? That´s too much Shounen for me to handle, and this is considerd to be a Seinen manga. I just couldn´t stand this whole romance thing going on either, it felt so incredibly cliché that I didn´t....know what to think.

The endning was good though, so you don´t have to worry about that.

Either way, this manhwa may be considerd as...pretty dark by some people, but It could´ve easily passed for a more darker Shounen, because there wasn´t that much of a explict or gore content in it ( In my opinion ).

I´m giving this a 6 because I felt it was incomplete, I also felt that it had many plotholes that could´ve maid this Manhwa even better if covered. I don´t know if there was some problem with the sales of this manhwa or something, but the ending felt a bit rushed ( Although it was pretty good ).

i loved it. i didn't know why i didn't read this before. it was on my reading list for a couple of months now and i just picked it up two days ago....

i love it so much, the stories, the characters, the setting. the never ending twists. it was a giant roller coaster for me. the end was so bittersweet. i'm glad that it ended that way but it was still bittersweet.

this is definitely one of my most favorite manhwa out there. Munsu is a great great character. i'm so glad to have read this

I just through the whole series in a manner of days (yes I'm crazy..) and I gotta say, I was hooked. It was thoroughly entertaining throughout. A very tragic story with twists and turns here and there. Munsu was a great main character. Originally this series reminded me of Berserk but it turned out different. I loved the ending chapters and the epic battle.

The main issue I had was with Sando. I wish we knew more about who she was and where she came from. Even if she was one of the main characters I wish we had more development and focus on her. Still don't understand her outfit, either bigrazz

Incredible piece of work. This isn't your average manga where the good always wins. The seriousness and maturity put into the plot have given readers a new kind of thrill. Only those who are mature and are ready to experience the feeling of intense carnage and tragedy should read this.
