Description
When the Wischtech threatened to invade the fiefs of Szaalanden, the Emperor dispatched fourteen youths. Of these, the Seven Heroes halted the invasion to herald a time of prosperity while the four Lances of Betrayal were supposedly defeated.

Two decades later, the Lances of Betrayal have reappeared and formed a bandit militia near the frontier fief Gormbark. A man with a black sword and a scar over his left eye slays an entire troop of that militia. He is identified as the boy, Koinzell, and becomes as much an object of fear as of hope even as his own past, motivations, and purpose are a mystery to those he meets on his journey.

Volume 0 encompasses a plot arc which leads directly into the main plot of Übel Blatt in Volume 1. It also introduces and develops the attitudes and motives of a few other characters aside from Koinzell.

The story has been pretty entertaining so far and the art is very nice. This is authors' first attempt in this genre, so the plot seems to be simple so far, but couple of events hint that it might get more complicated in the future volumes. Never less it's a good read. I really liked the art, it's refreshing to see a more "cute" art in a story that mostly focus on battles and the author has good grasp of costume design. Plenty of lolis running around in tiny panties too.

As for people complaining about it being (or not being) berserk.. wtf?! Fantasy setting+antihero doesn't equals "berserk". The author doesn't attempt to imitate berserk at all, so it is beyond me, why people compare it to "berserk" at all. You can compare apples with oranges, but the comparison will go as far as that they are both fruits, same here.

I don't get why everyone is comparing Beserk to Ubel Blatt. Nearly every series has some connections to another manga, either by influencing another, or being influenced. Take for example, 666Satan w/ Naruto: Funny characters, major timeskip, kaballah/demon-abosrbing thingy.... (granted the authors are twin brothers)
Overall the characters are coming along nicely, though i think that v0 might've been better off not revealing Koinzell's true identity & purpose (though you can already guess why even only reading like, the first chapter~)

My only question/complaint is that i can only find v0 and the first 6 chaps of v1. Normally, i'd wait for the next scanlations to come out, but i heard that the scanlators (sushi counter?) isn't active anymore. Even if it was, I don't know where to read it... TT_TT

Despite what some the reviews below say, I really enjoy reading this manga. The plot is set up very well, the characters are likable, and artwork is top-notch. I don't think that it's got anything above Berserk quality; but then again Berserk is really just incomparable seeing as it has a fan base that streches back 30 somepin' years ago. On it's own, It's a great manga that has definitely got into my top 10.

geez ppl. stop comparing it to beserk. if u wanna comment about how berserk is god or sumthin, go to the berserk thread. n for those complaining about how horrible Ubel Blatt is, at least read the first 3 chaps. itz pretty awesum if u dun jus read the first few pages n say, berserk ripoff, next. besides, the fight scenes being fast are a GOOD thing. i mean, do we really wanna read a manga that has ONE fight scene that lasts like several sumthin chapters (cough cough Bleach cough cough).

besides, koinzell is a character w/ depth. i mean srsly, his motives, his lack of support, etc. he seems omnipotent, but u c his limits later on. besides, koinzell got style. XD

It simply has some of the best artwork around the story is all right but people tell me berserk is way better . I have seen some samples of berserk and the art of Blatt is definitely better so I think it has to do with the story ,but this is decent stuff and has great artists working on it.

Even if it doesn't give me that feeling of "I will be something special" I do not judge it harshly because I just read the opening and the first Volume so I do not read much to judge.

There is some poster in here that says that this manga is a copy of Berserk and that it doesn't worth the 9s and 10s people gave it. I say he can't even understand a storyline difference even if it hits him on the head. To say this manga is even close to Berserk is probably one of the .. ummmm silliest ,cause I can;t say anything else, things I ever heard. Berzerk has tons or gore and splatter and it gives you a heavy aura that feels like pulling you down. Ubel Blatt is more light and its drawings can a calmer feeling and they are unable to give you the same feelings or even close to that Berzerk does. Also I will not comment the difference of the "explicit violence and sexual scenes" as he said they contain because Ubel just gives me the feeling its an anime with a boy cutting off people and letting them die and being a bit naughty while Gutts cuts thousands of monsters and enemies to pieces covering himself with blood.
[edit by mod, Warning: Berserk related spoiler]
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Also Gutts fights first because he wants revenge from the man he thought friend, second to protect the girl he loves and third to prevent his "fate" which means him dying while
(if you haven't read the Volume 0 then this is a spoiler but its not major but still a spoiler)
Spoiler (highlight to view)
the boy hero here just wants to take revenge on the people that killed him and decided to call themselves the "7 heroes"
Finally I want to say that just because both use the same sources to create the manga it doesn't mean they are the same. If its like that then Ares, Claymore, Berserk, Lodoss Wars, this one and who knows how many other manga are the same so lets give all except Berserk a 5 and ignore them.

This manga has a very good storyline, actually much better than I expected and I am glad that while I was visiting KMT I decided to check what their releases are. Its very easy to read and their drawings are pretty clear unlike Berserk and that makes it even more light. It seems pretty fast paced but it doesn't seem in fast forward like some that make you feel a year passed just by reading a chapter.

Pretty good job and I recommend it. At least read Volume 0 and after that decide. Well sadly its pretty early since it has been translated up to the middle or a bit further of Volume 2 but I am hoping it will change its slow release pace not of the translations but the actual releases. Almost 4 years for only 6 releases isn;t the best thing. I guess it will be slow like Berserk so they will be 2 of my manga that I will love and wait a whole life to see the ending ^^;

Hehe Finally the second volume was translated! I can't be more happy. I am already reading it and I am happy to see whats going on next. Well not much to add it still cool and the story progress slowly as always.

Also I wanted to comment on the ***** people that instead of putting here a decent rating they argue and i am talking both about the ones that accuse haters and the ones that accuse lovers. If you do not like it just post why you do not like it and believe it worths below 0. If you love it just put a 10 and write with joy why you did that too. For the ******** that comment on the comments and likes or dislikes of other people. Ger a life.

I think the comparison with berserk is totaly wrong (whether your blatt-Fan of Berserk-Fan)
because their soo different
i liked the idea of a corrupte empire with a false history and false heroes and plus i liked that in the begining the main char doesn't pretend to be a hero and admit that he selfishly wish for vengeance
what with berserk is over ********* better ??
to tell the truth i started reading berserk long ago and as awed by everything about it but the last arc was such a let down i dropped it
i think berserk is being watered down recently (since the white hawk arc and the witch and isuduro joining the party)

Okay Manga

First off, let me start by saying that I am a Beserk fan, a HUGE Beserk fan. The only manga that has ever come close to its dark appeal is Claymore. But I will be the first to say that this manga is NOT a rip off of Beserk. Sure they're from the same genre, but when have we started reading manga based on it being similar or not similar ENOUGH to a particular manga. I mean if we want to talk about similarities, then sure there are some. Both have faeries, both are set during an medieval time period. Both use swords and magic and both of the protagonist were betrayed by people close to them. That's it! But give me a break if that is the reason people are scoring it low, that's a pretty crappy reason. Every work written today, whether good or bad, was inspired by other works! There is no such thing in this day and age as an original idea. There is an such thing as an original "take" on an idea. That being said, who cares if this work was inspired by Beserk in the end Ubel Blatt is Ubel Blatt and Beserk is Beserk.

To the people griping about underage sex. Uh...did any of you bother to read the manga...no really did you? Because if you had, you would know that the kid that your so put off with engaging with older women is NOT a kid at all. He states over and over again, that he has been seeking revenge for 20yrs. Do the math people, if he was first betrayed when he was oh...15 and has been seeking revenge since that time, how old would that make him? Yes, the body he now inhabits is child like...12 to 15 in age, but he is a 30something yr old man people!

Now to my review. The manga isn't the best I've read. It's not as dark as say Claymore or Beserk IMHO but it does alright for the genre. It's definitely not the worst written manga either. It has it share of action and gore. The fight scenes are easily discernible. The art is just above average. There is a element of shota, but "only" because of the leads appearance, not age. The main protagonist is likable. Basically its interesting enough to fill in when your faves haven't been updated.

Likes I said its not the best and not the worst, so I gave the series an 8.

Oh and this would seriously rock as an anime!

I'm rating this without berserk in mind(I couldn't rate it if compared to Berserk anyways. I haven't read Berserk) I like this manga so far. The plot is simple, and I really do like the artwork. It's very good for a Mangaka's first try at this sort of genre. And it's a lot more shounen than seinen so I can read it more easily.

This is quite a good manga, to bad everyone is trying to put it in the same mindset as Berserk. I agree with some of the people who are saying that the comparison is ridiculous since they are both two totally different stories. The only similarities that you can really put them on with is that they are both dark fantasies. Well with that aside I have to say I was pretty pleased on what I read. The story seems to be building up in an interesting way, and the artwork is pretty great too. The characters were pretty intriguing as well, the history of a good amount of them would probably prove to be a very interesting read as well.
