Good, for a shonen

Fairy Tail is about the adventures of Natsu Dragneel, a fire magician who use some ancient magic called Dragon Slayer, and his comrades in a magic guild called Fairy Tail. Teaming up with Lucy, Erza, Gray, and his flying cat Happy, they make what is called as one of the strongest team in the guild. Actually the guild has more characters than those 5 but they are the ones who get into the spotlight the most.

I used to think that FT was comparable to One Piece (man, how I was so wrong), but as it drags on, it's become clear that FT is never close to OP's standard. OP is meant to be a long story, it's very detailed and well-prepared. FT is more like a typical shonen series, where the opponents just show up one after another. That is why there's no death on FT, nor major char development, as they were not intended to exist on the first place. I will still say that Mashima did good job drawing stunning background set from one arc to another but that's the only part where it's close to OP's quality.

Anyway, I still think it's quite good, as a light read. The art is good, and it's fun to read at times. The fan service has been part of Mashima's work so if you decide to pick it up, be prepared. Also you can't hope much for a power balance in FT, as the guild is always come out top. The fights are not tricky, the protagonists simply gain immense power when they think about their comrades during fights. I don't have to recommend it, look at the number of the people who read it and read some comments about the series, then you decide whether to pick this up or not.

I agree with most recent reviews telling how the series is going down hill until i read tartaros arc the series basically does a 180. Some really big revelations were made which made natsus abrupt strength plausible to those who want to say the series sucks go read the tartaros arc.Im pretty sure everyone already gonna change there view of fairy tail after tartaros arc anime airs.
WHAT IM SAYING IS HIRO MASHIMA SERIOUSLY RESTORED THE SERIES IN ONE DAMN ARC THE AMOUNT OF WTF's SINCE TARTAROS ARC HAS BEEN UNCOUNTABLE. I wouldnt read the spoiler if i was you.

NATSU IS END . END IS ZEREFS DEAD BROTHER WHICH HE REVIVED FROM HIS BROTHERS SKIN.ACOLOGIA HAS A HUMAN FORM THAT LOOKS LIKE SSJ3 GOKU AND MADARA HAD A BABY.ITS EPIC

Way Down Hill

I gave this a pretty good and hopeful review a few years ago but now i feel i have to take it back and update it. Man i really loved fairytail at first, i felt it had so much potential and probably would eventually become one of the big 3 (naruto, Bleach, One piece) at the time. However since then its gone way down hill and i can barely stomach reading it some times. To put everything into perspective for you for how this happened i go step by step.

First of all the good points: The art is pretty good, im cool with ecchi and the comedy and over all it had a pretty good shounen feel. if theres one thing fairy tail can do its make and hype op characters the best thing about it to me is their character designs, abilities and their world building. I always really like how most new enemy characters look like and there abilities are always good too. The powers Hiro comes up with are pretty cool and great for the world of Fairytail. If anything fairytail really knows how to hype up their characters and that in a sense is why fairytail went down hill.

Now the reason why it sucks Now: To start id say the "friendship power up" is one of the main reasons. I feel like the author himself LOVES Fairytail (the guild) soooo much that he can never truly make anything bad happen to them. He constantly Over powers most of them especially (natsu, gray &ezra) to the point where they almost never lost a fight at this point. Its so ridiculously some bull cause they sometimes fight some one that has been hyped up to being so powerful then one they meet fairytail (especially those 3) they always get their ass handed to them and sometimes instantaneously in the same chapter they were introduced. Not only that a lot of the "wins" now are asspulls at this point. Where they lose all logic into why they win and just made them win. A lot of times all they do is get more determined with no real change in strength. There all a lot of moments that were some major Bull (mainly from that famous 3) but to name the biggest so far. Which is hard cause it was a lot was:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
when erza lost ALL her senses and still managed to find the enemy (some how) and beat them and all they said as to why is "because shes erza"... or when gray won a fight against an enemy (that couldnt be hurt by any of his attacks and completely dominated him) by just throwing a ball at him..... or natsu oh natsu how he beats almost EVERYONE will some regular manner like with one punch or a boulder
. There are a lot more i could say especially for these 3. By the way Its not like i want them to lose every fight but i just want it to be fair and make sense. There is no real world (even in fantasy) where someone just always wins like that. All there fights are the same too. they just show a little struggle but dominate. Even deaths are some bull cause Hiro himself loves fairytail (the guild) so much:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
None of fairytails members have died, even when some like the guild master hav been at this point many times and it it haves been implied many times that he was going to. The only member to have died in the past was Lisanna but Oh guess what!?.... she wasnt really dead she was just transported to another world....yea cop out. EVEN the Cat at one point was sacrificing himself to fly away a nuke like explosion from a "powerful" enemy and it did explode on him but he actually survived that and with nothing but Frizzy hair. lol what a joke huh.

Although this covered a majority of what i hate there is still one more and thats the story and "hyping up." Im not gonna get that much into this but basically what fairytail does is introduce a new threat then design them well, give them an awesome ability(s), Hype them up to a really high, dangerous and potentially unstoppable level then completely Shit on them. Every are to the core is the same, something different may be happening but when they meet fairytail (the guild) they will just get owned and sometimes embarrassingly, pathetically, and hilariously easily too. Like i said i love the designs and abilities of the characters and enemies so when i see then just get tossed out the window ( and like i said sometimes in the same chapter they were introduced) i obviously get pissed cause there is no "actual" fights in this just "trolling wins". If your an enemy of fairytail (the guild) it doesnt matter how strong you are or your strategy or any incredible ability you have, you will be trolled. The worst arc to me that was the ULTIMATE example of everything i dislike about fairytail is the " Grand Magic games" tournament arc. EVERY enemy/battle was trolled by fairytail and in a sad way.

To end this i just cant stand this whole unending cycle of nonsense and as the story goes on nothing is is changing.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
currently natsu beat up a gigantic god like being with one punch....
Even the stories getting sadder since potential great twists are being dictated by fans apparently:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
such as the current arc where gray turned "evil", it could have been a good way to set up a gray vs natsu all out battle but because fans didnt like gray being evil he took it back next chapter and made grays evil thing an act
. At this point im just reading this as a gag manga and im not taking it seriesly at all anymore. i make it my point to finish stuff i started (especially after years dedicated to it) so if it wasnt for that, i would have dropped this a long time ago; or maybe part of me hopes it will get better (which i know it wont). part of this was sort of unloading, and part of this was a review but over all its the truth.

like others said, this manga is going downhill. The formular for EVERY single battle is: strong enemies -> main characters almost die (in about 1-2 chapters) -> because of friendship and that famous skill "belief/hope no jutsu" (in about 3-4 pages) -> main chars win (in about 1-2 pages). seriously, wtfconfused? totally nonsense and it's getting on my nerves. so yeah the plot and development is terrible, boring and looping, with unnecessary fanservice (that's ecchi? i call it almost-hentai).
what happened, Mashima? I remember it used to be so cool....

Unfortunately Overrated

To be fair, I enjoyed this series when it began. Although it didn't boast particularly new concepts (guilds, friends on magical adventures to fight bad guys, and boobs), the characters were fairly entertaining. I like a loud, boisterous crowd. That's about all this manga provided, however.

The story arcs become repetitive and there is an irritating use of friendship to win battles (which becomes very anticlimactic). Ecchi doesn't bother me in general, but it takes away from the story in Fairy Tail. It is excessive.

While this manga may have been a "fun" read for the first few volumes, it never became thoughtful or surprising. I don't know if there is any hope for Fairy Tail in the future, but for those seeking a solid Shounen now, it is safe to say you will find higher quality characters and story lines in other mainstream manga such as One Piece, Naruto, or Soul Eater. Or HxH.

Side-note: anime had good music, but the art degraded slightly over time and the arcs felt more rushed than in the manga.

A One Piece wannabe with nudity

I tried the series once when it was new, judged it as an attempt to rip off One Piece and moved on but i picked up our volumes on a slow day at my library job because i heard some crazy things on the web and flipped through the series again. What i saw was unoriginality to the max, tasteless ecchi (with a scene of sexualized torture standing out), no real stakes or world logic and borderline plagiarism. Is Kodansha trying to troll Shueisha here as i saw Franky and the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. So the only difference to One Piece is that the Fairy Tail constantly throws it's female leads under the bus, lacks any tone and now managed to rack up about 10 (!?!) spin-offs.
Two points off and zero interest on my side remains. Read the recent Blind Faith Descent (9/10) for a good and rather dark adventure series with a comparable setting or SJ's stuff. They at least have a proven formula.

One of the most BORING manga EVER

You want some of Fairy Tail? This is how it'd been going until I dropped it at chapter 300 or so:

1. Oh shit, the enemy is too strong. Wonder how we can pull it off this time.
2. This is bad, we are almost destroyed. I'm telling you they're too strong for us.
3. Oh wait, we can still try. C'mon people, they're bad, we can't afford to loose to the bad. This is for friendship (my ass) and justice (puke!)
4. See? We've got new power and magic discovered. Now the enemy is in trouble. Told ya readers, just drag your asses with us over the week and you'll see the glory, and the BOOBs as well. (Mashima Hiro seems never get tired of female character fighting with big boobs holding on to the last of cloth)

The art is not of my taste, too childish. This is personal taste anyway.
The contents is shallow and lame story development has been more and more predictable. The bad guys are just bad for no reason, trying to pick a fight whenever they can with good people. This is the type of story I hate the most. It's just silly to have a clear division of good and bad.

Really? the average score for Fairy Tail is 8.18/10? Really? I personally think this is injustice to the other better series (countless). 5.0/10 is what it worths.

Just Mediocre

I personally love silly stuff (One Piece, Toriko, Gintama, etc.), but I also think that even silly stuff should be intelligent, creative and try its best to be original or at least to have an distinctive “identity”. And there’s where Fairy Tail fails so hard.

The reason I can’t stand mangas like Fairy Tail or Bleach is because they are shallow, typical, predictable and full of asspulls. It is a fact that there’s no manga (especially a shonen manga) that has perfect writing. Even FMA who is a masterpiece on its own has a few asspulls. A FEW. But is not the same when there’s a Deus Ex-Machina in every single important moment or fight (Natsu against the Big Bad of the story arc).

When a said shallow in the previous paragraph I didn’t meant philosophical depth or something similar. I beforehand acknowledge that manga is more a form of entertainment, rather than a form of art. What I meant is that Fairy Tail shows little no almost none sign of thought or genuine work by the mangaka for the story. There’s no world building and there’s no noticeable structure for the concept of magic or wizards. I feel that everything was “made” in a random way. It just feels that anything that is added to this manga is just added for the sake of putting more stuff, instead of a making a contribution for a bigger purpose. Even a kid with a lot of imagination and creativity could have come with something much better than this.

In resume: there’s nothing wrong with a manga that has a ridiculous atmosphere and that doesn’t mean to be artistic in any way. But it is wrong when such manga is not made in a smart, creative, organized fashion and when the author is giving signs that he’s trying to be original.

Sigh...just..no...it's a typical shounen manga..so predictable with stupid powers that come out from no where...just pathetic to even read it..(even though I don't know why I can't stop reading to it despite these problems....) Characters do not develop...only many villains become good guys...
Whenever they are in the verge to lose, they get the sudden powers from the cliche idea of protecting friends -_-...
Arcs ends so fast and predictable...
Characters; actions are obvious, nothing new.

Title says it all. Every character remains the same, only the plot change. AT LEAST Bleach and Naruto give us an idea on why their protagonists are strong. The authors show how they accumulate strength and skill overtime. With this manga, I don't know how Natsu is able to kick all of his opponents' ass, except he has special dragon magic ability. Good story at first, but gets redundant REEALLY fast.
