this manga pull you in and never let go until the end. you cant put it down however much you want because you must, you need to know what happens next. for a manga that relies on a board game, this is a very incredible feat.

the characters are excellent, well rounded individuals that you can symphatised on. the plot, though using a touch of the supernatural is very logical and believable in its way. the pacing is superb and the arts are perfect for the atmosphere of this manga.

some people are dissatisfied with the ending. for me however, this is appropriate - for a manga with this much gravitas, it only need to rely on realism as wish fulfillment plot will only ruin it.

the ending was disappointing but it is great the anime is awesome too. It captivated you to keep reading and watching, you feel motivated to play with them. Nothing is your typical manga, it's unique. This was my favorite manga, but the ending was disappointing it was rushed, I wish their was another season. rumor states that Hotta yumi based the story off a real player but got sued so they had to rush it...

This isn't the type of action-y fast paced manga, but it is really entertaining. The plot was well developed and the characters were easy to fall in love with. The only down side is that the ending was sort of blah. And though I don't really like it, I understand why the author ended it that way since it sort of marked a new beginning for Hikaru.

Excellent manga ,it could be childish but it's not ,I some times hated the main character but i also understand him some other times, its really like seeing a life in front of you and you wish that it would never ends, but Warning, the ending is fucking horrible, it fucking sucks for that, the manga is like not the best thing in the world but that makes it better , not sure how to explain but for not being incredible its very good and its realistic and the plot its far from being childish and far from being stupid, in fact the plot is one of the best ones i've seen next to Historie,I haven't watch the anime but i guess that is not as good as the manga it self, sorry if i sound stupid but my English is far from being perfect but u got the idea which is the one thing that is important here

The series manages to pull you in an excite you even if you never even heard of Go before and that is largely due to great characters that are realistically portrayed and well developed over the course of the story; however that is strictly tied to the game of Go and their struggles with the competitive scene. Though that's reasonable, after all the series is about the sport, but it also has the effect of making them harder to relate with since they don't seem to have a life outside of it. There are however some great moments of characters interacting with uninvolved people that do not actually know that much or even care about Go and that has the effect of outlining even more the dedication with which the main characters pursue their passion (the world of Go is indeed small and unnoticed but its conflicts are very passionate).

For all the development, however, the series' end leads to nowhere in particular and is actually rather dull and lacks any catharsis. It promised a lot more on the way and there was a lot to look forward to, but none of the great confrontations ever happen. It feels like the series was cut abruptly on short notice.

Nonetheless, it's a great series which I'd recommend for anyone with an interest in the sports genre.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
When I first read the manga several years ago, of course I loved it, but I absolutely hated the ending. Now that I'm older, I think it was an excellent move by the author. When Sai disappears, you realize (Just like Hikaru) how attached you are to him, even though you never really appreciated him before. It also allows Hikaru to grow not only as a Go player, but also as a person. It was a needed step. It personally reminded me of a step every child must take; the first step of independence. It is most defiantly a coming-of-age story.

Anyway, I can't recommend it enough. This manga will make you laugh; it'll make you cry; and it'll make you feel a sort of passion for the game of Go, just because the mood of the manga is so infectious.

Hopefully there is a new season for this. But maybe it's already too old so i highly doubt that.Only if a miracle could happen though.Really nice anime/manga for me.I got bored of anime and it surprise me in the first few episodes for a board game which have a very good drama.Hope there is a 2nd season and anime.

It was one of the best manga in its time.
I love it when this series first come out, actually i never imagined that an igo manga will be this great. At that time I was just curious, what is Igo?
This series (until now) is perfect... Unique idea, Good story, VERY Nice artwork, Likeable characters, Never say bad for the ending, it's just that Hikaru's journey still continue... In our imagination..
I've re-read it many times and never get boring! That's quality of best Manga.

Everyone that liked the ending have made some really good points regarding the ending of Hikaru no Go. When I read the series the first time (3 or so years ago), I didn't personally enjoy the series, but now that I've reread it a few times (and my tastes have changed), I've been able to really enjoy the ending. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

I've always felt that it was more of a slice-of-life/coming-of-age story, so characters are bound to appear and disappear just like what would naturally happen in real life (even with the more important characters *ahem*). The fact that the ending didn't really resolve anything explains a lot about the world of "Go"... in fact, I love it when series end this way, because it's always really fresh. Sometimes it's better to just not see how everything is played out and to just imagine it yourself.

I guess people are just disappointed because the ending is surprisingly realistic and ambiguous, but that's what's great about hikago.

Aside from that, I've always enjoyed re-reading hikago. I love the development of the characters, and the storyline itself. I love seeing how Hikaru learns to love go, his rivalry with Akira, and all of the people that take an interest in Hikaru's go. All the characters play Go for different reasons, some play for fun, some try to become pros, and few ever become pros.

Well, maybe I'm a little TL;DR but whatevs, hikago deserves it.

I mostly agree with what OppKnox said about the manga, it's true that the ending doesn't end like you expect a shounen series to end even if you've never herd of Go before reading this like myself then it's still worth checking out, it's original and it's always more about the story and characters then about Go itself. Hikaru and Akira make a great rivalry honestly one of the best I've ever seen developed I just wish it continued on even longer.
